Liverpool played hosts to West Ham United at Anfield earlier this evening looking to secure another win at their home turf. The Reds made a slow start to the game but conceded an early goal in the tenth minute when Pablo Fornals scored with an excellent finish. However, the home side managed to grab the equaliser via Mohamed Salah’s penalty just before the half-time break.
The Merseyside giants came roaring back in the second 45 minutes but struggled to make their possession count in the attacking third. However, there was a twist in the tale as Diogo Jota came on to score from close range in the 85th minute as Jurgen Klopp’s men hung on to claim a brilliant 2-1 comeback win over their East London opponents.
Let’s take a look at how each Liverpool player performed during the clash against the Hammers.
GK: Alisson Becker – 6/10
The Brazilian keeper made a couple of good saves and distributed the ball well out from the back. However, he won’t be happy for conceding such an early goal.
RB: Trent Alexander-Arnold – 7/10
The English right-back didn’t give away too much defensively and was a constant threat because of his creativity from the right flank.
CB: Nathaniel Phillips – 8.5/10
Phillips made his first appearance of the season today and excelled playing at the heart of Klopp’s defence. He looked assured at the back and performed immaculately to restrict the opposition to just one goal during the game.
CB: Joe Gomez – 5.5/10
The English centre-back’s weak header gave Fornals the chance to get a strike in at goal, and the Hammers playmaker made no mistake from close range. However, he showed great character to recover and did enough to earn a clean sheet in the second half.
LB: Andrew Robertson – 7.5/10
The Scottish full-back was a real bundle of energy down the left-wing and caused a lot of problems with his desire to run with the ball and get to the byline. However, his final delivery left a lot to be desired.
CM: Georginio Wijnaldum – 7.5/10
The Dutch midfielder did his job by retaining possession well in midfield and worked hard to help his side get over the finishing line with all three points in the bag.
CM: Jordan Henderson – 7/10
The Liverpool captain led his team well towards securing another comeback victory at Anfield. He showed great hunger to get on the ball and delivered some inviting crosses during the 90 minutes.
CM: Curtis Jones – 5/10
Jones struggled to get into the game and failed to create anything meaningful in the final third.
RW: Mohamed Salah – 8/10
The Egyptian winger stepped up to convert the spot-kick just before half-time. He created a lot of headaches for the West Ham defenders but didn’t have his finishing boots on today.
ST: Roberto Firmino – 5.5/10
The Brazilian striker dropped deep to make things happen but was mostly left frustrated in the opposition half. He needs to improve soon or else risk losing his first-team place to Jota.
LW: Sadio Mane – 7/10
The Senegalese wide player was sloppy and gave away the ball too often in the first half. However, he recovered and produced a much-improved display in the second.
Substitutes:
CAM: Xherdan Shaqiri – 8/10
The Swiss international came off the bench and looked real sharp during the latter stages of the contest. He provided an incisive pass to set-up Jota’s winning goal which will please Klopp.
LW: Diogo Jota – 8/10
The Portuguese wide player was denied a goal by VAR. However, he deserves a lot of praise for keeping his head down and popping with another game-winner for Liverpool at Anfield.
CM: James Milner – N/A
He hardly had any time to make an impact.
