Premier League giants Chelsea were the most active team in the whole of Europe through the summer transfer window, and with good reason. The Blues’ only signing for two windows before that was American speedster Christian Pulisic, whose arrival did come as a blessing to them at certain points last season. Despite the effect that he has had on the side, the fact that there were holes within this Chelsea team that needed to be filled was apparent to see. Many expected the London club to splurge in the summer, but few would’ve predicted the extent of the business they would end up doing.
The Blues secured various top signings over the course of the summer, with some rather unexpected ones squeezed in there as well. The understanding that defence was one of the areas that Lampard needed to address was always there, and to that effect, they completed the free signing of Brazilian veteran Thiago Silva from PSG. Ben Chilwell was brought in to fill the left-back role as well, as Marcos Alonso and Emerson failed to live up to the manager’s expectations. Another defensive signing was that of Malang Sarr, but the promising centre-half was immediately shipped out on loan to Portuguese giants Porto.
In terms of midfield and attack, it’s safe to say that Chelsea made massive strides in the transfer market. The acquisition of Timo Werner from right under the noses of fellow Premier League rivals Liverpool, was a commendable achievement to say the least. Behind him, the Blues brought in one of Europe’s highest rated starlets, in Kai Havertz. Although the German duo are taking their own time to settle into the pace of the English game, you can bet your bottom dollar that they will both come good in the long run.
The next marquee signing that Chelsea made in attack was that of Ajax’s Moroccan speedster Hakim Ziyech. The winger was one of the players that scored in the Blues’ 4-4 draw against the Dutch champions last season, and his services are sure to come good as well. Edouard Mendy is the last name that was acquired over the summer, and the Senegalese international’s exploits have already won over the hearts of the Blues faithful. Despite making so many sighing, the number of departures that Chelsea sanctioned were limited by their usual standards. There are still two players that Chelsea should cash in on in the winter.
Two Players That Chelsea Should Cash In On In The Winter
Danny Drinkwater
The English midfielder was formerly a Leicester City player, from where he was acquired on the back of the Foxes’ title-winning campaign a few years ago. Although N’Golo Kante was also brought in through the same route, its safe to say that the Frenchman has seen a lot more success. Drinkwater spent a couple of spells out on loan, but has failed to capture the imagination of the Chelsea faithful. Despite still being in the Blues’ books, the chances of him ever playing for the Stamford Bridge club again are extremely bleak.
Marcos Alonso
The Spanish speedster started the season as the second choice left-back behind Ben Chilwell, but after a despicable performance in the draw against West Bromwich Albion, Lampard was quick to drop him from the side. Yet to make an appearance after that abysmal display, Alonso is unlikely to come back into the side, with Emerson now being preferred as the second choice for the role. The Spaniard’s apparent inability to defend has become a nuisance to Lampard’s ambitions, and it would be surprising if he isn’t sold in the winter window.
