In a recent report, The Sun has revealed that Sheffield United are eyeing a loan move for Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo in January. It is understood that the Blades boss Chris Wilder is eager to strengthen his squad when the transfer window reopens this winter and could make a loan move for the Red Devils outcast whose current contract at Old Trafford runs out at the end of this campaign (via The Sun).
Rojo’s Mounting Frustrations At The Theatre Of Dreams
At the moment, Rojo is on the fringes at Man United and doesn’t seem like he is a part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s plans for this campaign. Hence, it makes sense for him to seek a move elsewhere in search of more game in the coming seasons.
The Argentine defensive ace is yet to make an appearance for the Mancunian giants this term but has featured in a total of 122 senior matches for them, scoring two goals and providing four assists across all fronts.
Rojo stood out for his productive performances in Europe last season when he averaged 1.3 interceptions, 4.0 clearances, 0.8 shots and 0.8 dribbles per game in the UEFA Europa League. He even distributed the ball with accuracy after making 84.5% of his attempted passes in that competition (stats via whoscored). Even though the sample size is just four matches, yet the 61-time Argentine international showed just how capable he can still be as a centre-back if given a regular run of games at the highest level.
What Does The Argentine Defender Bring To The Table?
When fit and playing with confidence on the field, Rojo can be a class act in defence. He has got a wealth of experience of playing at the top level and is a terrific ball-playing centre-half. The South American sensation is proficient at sensing the danger quickly and winning the ball back for his side. He is also not shy of clearing his lines when being outnumbered by the opposition inside his penalty box. However, frequent injuries have taken a great toll on his body which explains why Solskjaer has stopped relying on his services this season.
What Should Solskjaer Do With Regards To Rojo’s Future?
Man United should consider sending Rojo out on loan in January so that he can play out the remainder of his contract away from Old Trafford before he becomes a free agent next summer. It will be a wise decision for Solskjaer to cut off some of the deadwood from his squad because he needs to set the standards high if the Red Devils are to be more successful in the years to come.
With all things considered, the Mancunian outfit should consider getting the deal done as early as possible during the January transfer period so that both the player and the club can finally move on in search of greener pastures.
