Aston Villa’s dream start to the Premier League continues as they beat Leicester City 1-0 at the King Power Stadium. It was a cagey affair with both sides trying hard to break the deadlock. But it was Aston Villa, whose passion and determination, especially in the second half, was rewarded when Ross Barkley pulled out a rabbit out of the hat to secure a late win for his side.

Kasper Schmeichel 6/10
Didn’t have anything to show in the first-half as Aston Villa failed to get a single shot on target. Did have to make a couple of relatively easy saves in the second half but had no chance against Ross Barkley’s majestic strike.
Timothy Castagne 7.5/10
Timothy Castagne’s duel with Jack Grealish was fascinating to watch throughout the game. The Belgian remained strong and disciplined, doing well to fend off attacks from the opposition while moving forward when necessary. A quality fullback.
Wesley Fofana 7.5/10
Wesley Fofana enjoyed a promising debut, showcasing a brilliant range of passing. He was also brimming with confidence and composure, building a formidable partnership with Jonny Evans.
Jonny Evans 7/10
Evans was fairly reliable in defence, as usual. Had to make a rash tackle late in the second half following Mendy’s loss of possession. Used his imposing figure to keep Aston Villa from really testing Schmeichel. Unlucky to concede a late goal.
James Justin 7/10
James Justin struggled to find a proper attacking avenue but worked admirably in defence. He made multiple blocks and was always willing to help out the two central defenders.
Nampalys Mendy 6.5/10
Nampalys Mendy was useful for Leicester City in that number six role, especially with his tackles and work-rate. Did lose the possession that could have led to an excellent chance for Aston Villa late in the game, shortly before making way for Hamza Choudhury.
Ayoze Perez 6/10
Ayoze Perez impressed the onlookers with his defensive work-rate, at times. Unfortunately, the former Newcastle man could do very little going forward.
Youri Tielemans 6.5/10
Youri Tielemans looked composed in possession and didn’t exactly have a bad game. However, he may have preferred more attacking presence and freedom in the middle third of the pitch.
Dennis Praet 6/10
Dennis Praet looked comfortable on the ball, but the Belgian, in truth, had a quiet game. He made way for James Maddison midway through the first half.
Harvey Barnes 6/10
Harvey Barnes was a menace for the Aston Villa defence. That is why he was quickly closed down whenever he had possession of the ball. A good job from the Villans to keep him out of the game.
Kelechi Iheanacho 6/10
Worked hard in an effort to get involved in the game. However, the ex-Man City attacker never really had the offensive support and clearly looks like a misfit in the lone number nine position.
SUBSTITUTES
James Maddison 6.5/10
Provided some much-needed offensive spark after coming on for Praet in the 68th minute. He was involved in a host of Leicester City’s attacking moments during the final phase of the game.
Islam Slimani 6/10
Provided a physical presence in the final third after replacing Iheanacho. His lack of pace and mobility, however, was detrimental for the Foxes.
Hamza Choudhury N/A
A late replacement for Mendy, who notably produced a clumsy pass, moments before the Aston Villa goal.
