The Independent has recently reported that Liverpool have made contact with Tottenham Hotspur over a potential deadline day deal for Paulo Gazzaniga. It has been claimed that the Reds have identified him as an alternative goalkeeping option to Alisson Becker following Adrian’s horrendous performance versus Aston Villa last weekend (via The Independent).
Adrian ended up shipping in seven goals against the Villans on Sunday which has increased the Merseyside club’s need to sign a new keeper. Furthermore, Alisson’s shoulder injury could keep him out for a few weeks which explains why it makes sense for Jurgen Klopp to orchestrate a late move to bring Gazzaniga to Anfield before the transfer deadline later tonight.
Gazzaniga’s Rise To Prominence At The English Capital Last Season
The Murphy-born goalie caught the eye with his performances in goal for Spurs in the previous campaign. The Argentine custodian was involved in 25 matches for the North London outfit last season, conceding 33 goals while securing five clean sheets on all fronts.
However, Gazzaniga was guilty of not taking care of the ball when distributing possession out from the back as he completed just 59.4% of his attempted passes in the 2019-20 Premier League campaign (stats via whoscored).

Gazzaniga is proficient at clearing his lines as he can put his foot through the ball, so he will be a good fit for Liverpool right now as Adrian has made some calamitous errors when passing the ball out from his penalty box. The one-time Argentine goalie has also got decent reflexes that enable him to pull off a few world-class saves at the back. However, he is not a good distributor of the ball, which could be a problem if the Reds manage to secure his services before the deadline.
Why Klopp Needs To Get Gazzaniga On Board Before The Deadline?
At the moment, Jurgen Klopp is in dire need of a capable goalkeeper who can serve as an ideal deputy to Alisson. Gazzaniga fits the bill perfectly as he has got the temperament and hunger to succeed wearing the famous red jersey of Liverpool. He will be a significant upgrade over the error-prone Adrian or the inexperienced Caoimhín Kelleher at Anfield right now.
Hence, the Reds should try everything in their power to bring the Argentine onboard either on a loan deal or permanently this summer. However, it won’t be easy for them to negotiate a transfer with Tottenham’s Daniel Levy this late in the window. Plus, Spurs have no need to help one of their rivals strengthen their squad unless they are willing to pay a significant sum to make the deal happen.
