Newcastle United played hosts to Burnley at St. James’ Park earlier tonight hoping to pick up a positive result at home. The Magpies made a bright start to the contest and went ahead courtesy of Allan Saint-Maximin’s goal in the 14th minute. The home side defended their narrow advantage valiantly and went into the half-time break one goal to the good.
The Clarets got themselves back into the game in the 61st minute when Ashley Westwood equalised with a tidy finish. However, Steve Bruce’s men responded positively and got themselves two goals ahead as Callum Wilson scored a quickfire brace to seal all three points for his team. The match ended with Newcastle earning a comfortable 3-1 win over the Lancashire outfit.
Let’s take a look at how each Newcastle player fared during the match against the Clarets.
GK: Karl Darlow – 7/10
The Magpies keeper pulled off a great save to deny Dwight McNeil in the first half. However, he couldn’t do much about Westwood’s strike after the half-time break.
RB: Emil Krafth – 7/10
He kept things solid defensively and even delivered a few inviting crosses from the right flank.
CB: Fabian Schar – 6/10
Schar often preferred to go long when distributing the ball but did well to restrict the opposition from scoring during his time on the field.
CB: Federico Fernandez – 6.5/10
The Argentine commanded his backline well and managed to keep Burnley’s Chris Wood in check throughout the 90 minutes.
LB: Jamal Lewis – 6/10
He dealt with everything that came his way at the back but struggled to create anything of note in the opposition half.
RM: Jeff Hendrick – 6.5/10
The ex-Burnley man won a few aerial duels against his old club but never looked like he had a goal in him.
CM: Jonjo Shelvey – 7/10
The former Liverpool midfield was not afraid to get on the ball and managed to cook up one good chance during the game. He also passed the ball with a lot of conviction.
CM: Isaac Hayden – 6.5/10
He was not afraid to have a strike at goal and worked hard to challenge for every loose possession at the centre of the park.
LM: Allan Saint-Maximin – 8.5/10
The Newcastle wing wizard opened the goal-scoring in the first half and linked up play well with his teammates in the final third. He was bright, energetic and hardly gave away the ball during his time on the field.
ST: Joelinton – 7/10
The Brazilian striker won a few headers in the opposition half and managed to orchestrate some decent openings in and around the Burnley penalty box.
ST: Callum Wilson – 8.5/10
The English striker did well to score soon after the Burnley equaliser and managed to secure maximum points for his side when he converted a penalty in the 77th minute.
Substitutes:
RB: Javier Manquillo – 6/10
The Spaniard worked hard and helped his side see out the win late in the game.
LM: Ryan Fraser – 7/10
The former Bournemouth playmaker won the penalty which made the points secure for the home side.
CM: Sean Longstaff – N/A
Not enough time to make an impact.
