In a recent report, The Sun has claimed that Liverpool striker Rhian Brewster is a subject of a £17m bid from Sheffield United. It is believed that the Blades have agreed to the Reds’ demands of inserting a £40m buy-back clause and are in pole position to secure his signature before next month’s transfer deadline (via The Sun).
Brewster’s Recent Rise In English Football
Brewster’s first and only appearance for the Merseyside outfit this season came in the FA Community Shield final versus Arsenal last month. He was guilty of missing a crucial penalty in the shootout which saw his team miss out on the trophy for the second year in a row.
However, the 20-year-old showed a few glimpses of what he is capable of during his loan spell with Swansea City, where he registered 11 goals in 22 appearances across all fronts. The English centre-forward loves to make space and get a few shots in at goal, but his overall contributions as a striker have left a lot to be desired.
Brewster finished his spell in the EFL Championship with an average of 2.5 shots, 0.5 key passes and 0.7 dribbles per 90 minutes to his name. However, he was very sloppy when linking up play with others around him as he made only 64.2% of his attempted passes in the English second division (stats via whoscored).
What Are The London-Born Frontman’s Best Attributes?
Brewster has been blessed with decent pace and agility that helps him make a few well-timed runs behind the opposition backline. He can also read the game well and is proficient at getting himself into some promising areas in the final third. The English centre-forward can make space for himself with ease and is not afraid to shoot, which could make him a lethal goal-scorer if given a regular run of games to shine at the highest level.
Should The Reds Sanction Brewster’s Departure This Summer?
However, Brewster is still relatively inexperienced and would need time to develop himself into a reliable goal-getter at the top level. A switch to Bramall Lane makes sense for the player at this stage of his football career as Chris Wilder could be the ideal man to nurture and get the best out of him in the years to come.
Liverpool should consider sanctioning Brewster’s exit as they have currently got a plethora of attacking options in their squad. Brewster is surplus to requirements at Anfield, but Jurgen Klopp knows that he could be nurtured into a future star, so adding a £40m buy-back clause could prove to be a shrewd move for the Reds in the long-run, especially if Brewster can hit the ground running at South Yorkshire.
