Premier League giants Chelsea crashed out of the Carabao Cup tonight after a 5-4 penalty shootout defeat to London rivals Tottenham Hotspur. The match finished 1-1 at the end of the ninety minutes, after some late Tottenham pressure led to an equalising goal from Erik Lamela. Timo Werner opened the scoring for the Blues in the first-half, but the Chelsea defence weren’t able to hold out for the remainder of the fixture. After four successful spot-kicks each, Harry Kane smashed it in past Edouard Mendy, before Mason Mount’s effort was pushed away by Hugo Lloris.

Edouard Mendy – 7
The Senegalese international made a strong account of himself on his debut for Chelsea as he made a couple of splendid saves to limit Spurs to just one. Didn’t lay a hand on a single penalty though.
Cesar Azpilicueta – 7
The Chelsea skipper left Sergio Reguilon floored in the lead up to the Chelsea goal, but wasn’t able to create too much else going forward. Worked hard tracking back and showed his composure as well.
Fikayo Tomori – 7
Wasn’t really troubled on too many occasions in the first-half, but found the going a lot tougher in the second period. Made some important blocks though, and impressed for the most part.
Kurt Zouma – 8
The Frenchman was a perpetual rock at the back for most of the ninety, but couldn’t deal with the cross that led to Lamela’s goal. Made multiple key tackles to keep Chelsea in the game though.
Ben Chilwell – 7
The youngster impressed on his debut for Chelsea, after a solid defensive performance for over an hour. Was the first player to be substituted though, and was replaced by Emerson.
Jorginho – 7.5
The Italian international put in an extremely fluent display in the Chelsea engine room, and found a delicious ball that Mason Mount should’ve made more of. Tucked his penalty away in style too.
Mateo Kovacic – 6.5
The Croatian got caught out of position on a couple of occasions, but was fluent with his passing. Made some typical forward surges, but to no effect. Sacrificed for the defensive presence of N’Golo Kante.
Mason Mount – 6
The Englishman had a night to forget at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium as it was his penalty miss that ended the shootout. Wasted a glorious chance to release Werner in the late stages as well.
Callum Hudson-Odoi – 7
The youngster put in a commendable shift in the first-half, giving Reguilon a lot of trouble with his movement. Tracked back well but gradually began to go missing in the second period.
Olivier Giroud – 6
The Frenchman wasn’t able to impact the tie in the manner that he would’ve liked, largely because of the lack of service from wide. Didn’t play all too badly but was substituted for Abraham.
Timo Werner – 6.5
The German speedster showed one moment of true class in the first-half when he finished past a static Lloris with utmost ease. His touch let him down on various occasions over the ninety though.

Emerson – 6
The Italian full-back replaced Chilwell around the hour-mark, and put in a decent attacking shift. Was possibly the player responsible for losing Lamela in the lead up to the Spurs equaliser.
N’Golo Kante – 7
The Frenchman came on and added a bit of dynamism to the Chelsea midfield. Made some sharp forward runs but wasn’t able to produce the required quality in the final third of the pitch.
Tammy Abraham – NA
Didn’t have time to make an impact.
