According to a recent report by the Wolves’ official website, they have completed the blockbuster signing of Portuguese international full-back Nelson Semedo from Barcelona. The defender already bid his farewell to Barcelona earlier today, by posting a heartfelt message on his Instagram account, as has been translated by Goal. His caption read, “Thank you very much Barcelona for giving me the opportunity to live the dream of wearing this shirt, of playing in Camp Nou, of learning and enjoying the best in the world.”
The speedster has agreed on an initial deal that runs for three years, which can then be extended for a further two more. Although it has been clarified that Wolves have signed Nelson Semedo from Barcelona, how he fits into the club remains to be seen. Speaking on the matter, Wolves Chairman Jeff Shi said, “It’s isn’t often that we have the opportunity to sign a world-class player from a world-class club. Nelson’s signing shows we will never stop progressing and we are still hungry and humble in our heart.”
How Have Wolves Risen To Such Great Heights?
Over the last couple of seasons, Wolves have undoubtedly been one of the biggest surprise packages of the entire division. Despite only earning promotion from the Championship a few years ago, the owners of the club have managed to transform them into one of the most feared outfits in the entirety of the Premier League.
World-class players like Raul Jimenez, Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho were brought in, all the while maintaining their former core. Now consistently seen challenging for a European spot towards the end of the season, its safe to say that Wolves have reached new heights.
What Is Wolves’ Right-Back Situation?
The departure of Matt Doherty probably isn’t one that Nuno Espírito Santo expected going into the summer break. The wing-back was, without a shadow of a doubt, one of their most influential players. His contributions in an attacking perspective will surely be hard to replace, and considering the quality he produced, it’s not at all surprising that Jose Mourinho came calling. Oskar Buur was signed in January, but is yet to impress, while Ki-Jana Hoever was recently acquired from Liverpool as well. Despite all of this, the addition of a proven high-quality defender like Semedo is sure to come as a considerable boost.
What Makes Semedo A Good Option For Wolves?
The Portuguese speedster has been around the top of the European game for a while now, having signed for Barcelona back in 2017. Formerly of Benfica, the full-back is known for his attacking play as well as blistering pace. While it must be conceded that his defensive game isn’t the greatest in the world, the fact that Wolves will deploy him as a wing-back makes him almost custom-made for the role. Capable of producing some sensational crosses from wide as well, the addition of a player like Semedo is sure to help bring the best out of some of Wolves’ attackers.
Wolves Have Signed Nelson Semedo From Barcelona: Smart Business By Nuno?
Wolves’ first-team actually boasts several Portuguese players, with the likes of Ruben Neves, Joao Moutinho and Rui Patricio all hailing from the European nation. What this means is that Semedo will take little to no time to get used to the surroundings. Matt Doherty was one of this Wolves side’s biggest attacking threats, and replacing him effectively was never going to be an easy task. Nuno, though, seems to have pulled one out of the bag with the enviable acquisition of this experienced Portuguese international.
