According to a recent report by The Courier, Premier League outfit Crystal Palace are said to be eyeing up a potential move for the services of Dundee United striker Logan Chalmers. The Scottish youngster currently plies his trade in the Scottish Premiership and has featured in each of United’s eight league outings so far this season.
The exclusive report has clarified that Crystal Palace scouts watched Dundee United’s Logan Chalmers and that they were joined at Tannadice by the representatives of a couple of other English clubs as well.
Palace’s scouts were accompanied by members from Southampton and Birmingham City as well, and they all left the league clash having watched the youngster put up a man-of-the-match performance. United manager Micky Mellon was also full of praise for the 20-year-old, as he said, “I thought Logan Chalmers was outstanding. You show me a better performance from a young Scottish player and I’ll be delighted because it means we have two of them.”
What Is Crystal Palace’s Strike Situation Right Now?
Roy Hodgson’s side currently have three natural options to choose from in the centre-forward role, but the fact that one of them is only on loan will be a concern. Belgian international striker Michy Batshuayi was acquired on a season-long loan from Chelsea a few weeks ago, and the attacker has already made an appearance for the club. Despite not getting on the scoresheet yet, the initial signs surrounding the forward’s arrival have been positive. Another Belgian striker who is still in the Palace books, but doesn’t feature as much, is Christian Benteke.
The former Liverpool man has shown no indications of making it back into the team recently, which means that he has fallen quite far down the pecking order. The first-choice striker at Selhurst Park since last season has been Ghanaian international attacker Jordan Ayew. Although the former Swansea man is yet to open his account for the campaign, his nine goals and two assists from last season played an important part in helping Palace finish in a comfortable position. Connor Wickham is another option who is in their ranks, but his involvement in the first-team picture is highly unlikely.
What Makes Logan Chalmers A Good Option?
The 20-year-old is among the highest-rated young strikers in the Scottish game at the moment, as has been conveyed by his manager as well. Despite not being the tallest player in the world, Chalmers uses his superior understanding of the game position himself very efficiently inside the opposition box. Capable of taking on a defender, it must be conceded that Chalmers excels at finding spaces in between opposition lines. Pacy and rather direct on the ball, the United man offers a wide variety of quality finishing skills in the area as well.
Crystal Palace Scouts Watched Dundee United’s Logan Chalmers: Should Hodgson Go For It?
With just three options to choose from this season, investing in such a promising striker might not be the worst idea from a Palace point of view. Michy Batshuayi is going to return to Chelsea at the end of the season, while Christian Benteke has been far from his best for quite a while now. Depending on a 29-year-old Jordan Ayew to deliver the goods every week would undoubtedly be pushing it as well. Considering just how highly Chalmers is being rated, moving for him would certainly be a smart move by the Eagles.
