Manchester City became the first club in the Premier League history to win their first game of the season for ten consecutive years as they secured a nervy 3-1 victory over Wolves. The Sky Blues were dominating the game, for the most part, leading at half-time with a 2-0 lead. However, an improved second-half display from Wolves led the way for a nervy ending, though Man City did eventually seal all three points with a late goal.
Wolves Player Ratings Vs Manchester City
Rui Patricio 7/10
Rui Patricio made a few decent saves to prevent Manchester City from adding to their tally during the early stages of the game. The Portuguese had a reasonably quiet evening in the second half.
Willy Boly 6/10
Not the best of matches for Willy Boly, who failed to impose his presence on the proceedings. His passes weren’t sticking, and the defender had a hard time coping with the Man City attack.
Conor Coady 6/10
Conor Coady had some nervy moments in defence early on and should have been much more competent defensively when Man City did dominate. Uncharacteristic performance from the English international.
Romain Saiss 5/10
It was Romain Saiss’ silly foul on Kevin de Bruyne that broke the deadlock, eventually allowing the opposition to stamp their authority on the proceedings. Poor judgement.
Adama Traore 7.5/10
Adama Traore had a fairly quiet first-half but became one of the most dangerous players for Wolves in the second. The Spaniard provided real energy and pace on the right flank, making life difficult for Benjamin Mendy.
Joao Moutinho 5.5/10
It was not the night for Joao Moutinho who found it difficult to get much time on the ball as Wolves kept losing possession, especially in the first half. Someone like Leander Dendoncker may have been a bit more effective in this game.
Ruben Neves 6.5/10
Ruben Neves struggled to prevent Manchester City midfielders from dominating the game. His performance improved significantly in the second half, notably making some excellent interceptions while also providing some dangerous crosses into the box.
Pedro Neto 6/10
Pedro Neto lacked invention for Wolves for the majority of the game. However, his second-half display was crucial in helping Wolves push for a potential comeback. Did eventually get subbed off during the final phase of the game.
Marcal N/A
Picked up an unfortunate knock during the early stages of the game, forcing Nuno Espirito Santo to take him off inside the first ten minutes. Got replaced by Ruben Vinagre.
Raul Jimenez 6.5/10
Raul Jimenez missed the best chance of the game when he failed to capitalise on Traore’s excellent cross, putting his shot wide from close range. The Mexican international was uncharacteristically quiet, and the goal was the only bright spot in an otherwise disappointing performance.
Daniel Podence 7.5/10
Daniel Podence was the liveliest attacker for Wolves in the second half. His industry, passion and determination made him a true menace for the Manchester City defence, and the ex-Olympiacos man even came close to finding the equaliser for his side. Unfortunate not to get on to the scoresheet.
SUBSTITUTES
Ruben Vinagre 6/10
Replaced the injured Marcal in the eighth minute but failed to deal with the tricky presence of Phil Foden on the left flank. Offered very little going forward, even in the second half.
Leander Dendoncker N/A
Came on for Moutinho to add more energy and drive in the Wolves midfield, during the final phase of the game.
Fabio Silva N/A
Made his Premier League debut by replacing Neto but had very little time to influence the game.
