Tottenham Hotspur kickstart their 2020/21 campaign on Sunday when they host Everton at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The Lilywhites are hopeful of a good season ahead under the leadership of Jose Mourinho, who has made impressive bargains during the summer transfer window. A win this weekend should boost the team’s morale as they look to get into the top four this season.
Predicted Tottenham Hotspur Lineup Vs Everton
Defence
Matt Doherty is poised to make his competitive debut for Tottenham Hotspur this weekend, after joining from Wolves earlier this summer. He looks set to occupy the right-back role, ahead of Serge Aurier while Ben Davies should start on the opposite flank.
Spurs’ right-sided overload should see Doherty operating almost as a wingback, with Davies acting in a deeper role to provide additional defensive cover for Toby Alderweireld and Eric Dier, at the heart of the four-man backline.
Mourinho has preferred Dier over Davinson Sanchez in central defence lately, so we expect the Englishman to feature this weekend. Japhet Tanganga is another option Mourinho could utilise.
Meanwhile, Hugo Lloris is still a guaranteed starter in goal for Tottenham, despite the arrival of Joe Hart. It will be interesting to see whether the ex-Man City star gets the nod ahead of Paulo Gazzaniga on the bench, though.
Midfield
Tottenham’s new signing Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is widely expected to start as the Lilywhites deal with the potential absence of Harry Winks. There are question marks over his fitness heading into the game, so the Englishman remains a significant doubt for this game.
Fortunately for Spurs, they already have a solid alternative in Hojbjerg. It will be interesting to see how the Dane fares under Mourinho, though the service provided by his potential midfield partner in Moussa Sissoko could also be critical.
Both Giovani Lo Celso and Tanguy Ndombele have played very little or no football at all, during the pre-season. It means the creative midfield role is likely to be occupied by Dele Alli, who, in contrast, has been in great form this summer.
Attack
Lucas Moura is once again likely to get the nod ahead of Steven Bergwijn in the attack, with Son Heung-Min being a guaranteed starter at left-wing. They will be in charge of providing the supply in the final third. Their willingness to win back possession could also be critical in the first line of press.
Finally, the Tottenham attack will be spearheaded by none other than Harry Kane, who is hoping for a great season ahead following a rough year so far.
