According to Calcio Mercato, Aaron Ramsey could be offered to Tottenham by Juventus this summer. The Italian giants are keen on signing midfielder Tanguy Ndombele but are exploring a swap deal instead of using cash. Ramsey is one of three players who could be used to sweeten the Ndombele deal, with Douglas Costa and Federico Bernardeschi being the other ones.
Aaron Ramsey’s Decline at Juventus
Ramsey moved to Juventus last season, on a free transfer from Arsenal. However, the midfielder has struggled to impose himself in Italy, failing to win the trust of Maurizio Sarri.
A few niggles have also played a role. As a result, the Welshman could only muster 24 league appearances this past season, with only 11 of them appearing from the start. He has contributed to only four goals and has found himself trailing the likes of Adrien Rabiot, Miralem Pjanic and Rodrigo Bentancur in the pecking order.
Although both Sarri and Pjanic have left Juventus this summer, Ramsey is not included in the long-term plans of new coach Andrea Pirlo. He is, in fact, one of the multiple players the Italian is looking to offload as the Bianconeri looks set to embark on a new era under the club legend.
A Perfect Replacement For Eriksen?
At least on paper, Ramsey looks like an ideal replacement for Christian Eriksen at Tottenham. The ex-Arsenal sensation is primarily a creative midfielder, who is capable of providing key passes in the final third and can also carry the ball across half-spaces.
It tunes in well with Jose Mourinho’s tactical philosophy that emphasises on the transition game. Ramsey’s ability to act as a ball-carrier, in that respect, should greatly improve Spurs’ effectiveness during the possession phases.
Much like Eriksen, the Welshman is also quite useful from set-pieces, though not as effective. But what makes him an ideal replacement for the Inter Milan star is his tactical understanding of the game, combined with nimble footwork and a remarkable vision, making him a primary source of creativity in the final third.
More Than An Attacking Midfielder
Aside from being an able creative midfielder, Ramsey bags loads of experience in the Premier League. He had made 371 competitive appearances for his previous club Arsenal and has featured in 262 Premier League matches, being involved in 91 goals.
Ramsey’s prolific record in the English top-flight could be useful for Tottenham next season. In addition, he is also known for his versatility as he can operate in a deeper midfield role. It should provide Mourinho with additional tactical options in the middle of the park, making it easier for him to accommodate the Juventus star in the starting lineup.
It all adds up to Ramsey being an excellent option for Tottenham Hotspur as they look to find a reliable option in the creative midfield slot this summer. However, it remains to be seen whether or not the midfielder is willing to switch to Spurs, being an ex-Arsenal player.
