Manchester United are experiencing a big defensive crisis presently and it’s unlikely to be solved anytime soon. They are pretty much without the first-team back four and Mourinho is apparently desperate to bring in new reinforcements this January before their season gets any worse.
After Real Madrid star Raphael Varane, who was a prime target for their defence, committed his future to the Los Blancos, Napoli’s Elseid Hysaj has now been brought to the fore by the rumour mill. And according to his agent Mario Giuffredi, the player could well be would be open to discussing a potential move to England.
Although the Albanian full-back recently signed a new five-year contract with the Serie A club, his agent has not ruled out a move.
In a recent interview, Giuffredi stated, “In a year he has played 60 games for both club and country… Now comes a bit of peace and he must raise the level of performances and as for Manchester United… well we will see… If they arrive with an offer which is tempting, we must take them into consideration… I do not say that it can be made in January, that would not be correct, but if an offer arrives we would think about it.”
Mourinho is without Luke Shaw, Eric Bailly and Chris Smalling. Hence, a move in January looks more than possible if Mourinho locks on the target. As has been the example with Paul Pogba, it is quite clear to what extent United could go to get the desired player.
Hysaj is a regular starter in the Napoli side having both the Italian league as well as Champions League experience. The 22-year old could be a valuable addition to the United side but it is quite unsure whether he will get regular first team action there when the all the players are fit. At 182cm, the centre back certainly has the height and physicality to cope with the fast and hassling Premier League playing style.
Hysaj has a good passing range and likes to clear out the ball from tight situations through short passes. Being the technical player he is, he could be an exception in the United team’s defence. A quick look at the other players will reflect that United largely have physically supreme defenders who are good at intercepting and heading out the ball. A player of his calibre could be a different and effective addition to the Red Devils.
