Sky Sports has claimed that Newcastle United are locked in a three-way battle for Brighton and Hove Albion full-back Bernardo this summer. It is understood that the Magpies will face stiff competition from Istanbul Basaksehir and West Ham United in pursuit of the Brazilian defender during this summer transfer period (via Sky Sports).
Bernardo’s Uneventful Season At Brighton
The 25-year-old endured a tough season at the American Express Community Stadium as he sat out of several games after he underwent knee surgery. Bernardo was involved in only 16 matches for the Seagulls in the previous campaign, picking up one yellow card and receiving a total of 784 minutes of playing time across various competitions.
The Sao Paulo-born left-back displayed a few signs of promise after averaging 1.9 tackles, 1.4 clearances, 0.5 shots and 0.6 dribbles per 90 minutes in the Premier League last season. However, he needs to distribute the ball a bit better based on his pass completion rate of 73.6% in the English top-flight (stats via whoscored).
Bernardo needs to ensure regular game time next season if he wants to stay relevant in English football. Injuries have disrupted his development at the south coast of England, so he might welcome the chance to make a fresh start this summer as it could help him to prove his worth in the 2020-21 Premier League campaign.
What Will The Brazilian Full-Back Bring To Tyneside?
Bernardo is a deceptively quick full-back who can make some driving runs with the ball down the left-wing. The Brazilian sensation is a great tackler and can be a reliable presence in defence. He is often quick to read the danger that allows him to pull off a few essential last-ditch clearances at the back. Bernardo is also not afraid to launch a shot from long range as he can strike the ball with power and accuracy.
Is Bernardo The Right Choice For The Magpies This Summer?
Newcastle boss Steve Bruce has got Achraf Lazaar as his only natural left-back option with Paul Dummett and Javier Manquillo also able to provide cover for that position if needed. Hence, the Magpies head coach needs to recruit a new face at left-back so that he has a strong squad capable of pushing for a top-half finish in the Premier League next season.
Bernardo is far from the best option for the Tyneside giants, but his addition could prove to be a necessary move as Bruce cannot afford to lead his players into the new season with just one recognised left-back at St. James’ Park. All in all, Bernardo could serve as a cost-effective choice for the Magpies to consider before the summer transfer window comes to a close later this year.
