According to Daily Mail, Tottenham Hotspur have been offered the chance to sign Diego Costa. The striker has been put up for sale by Atletico Madrid this summer as they look to balance the books following Coronavirus pandemic. Spurs, meanwhile, are in the market for a centre-forward and a potential reunion between Costa and Jose Mourinho could be on the cards this summer.
How Has Costa Fared In Spain?
Following his downfall at Chelsea, Costa returned to Spain in January 2018, rejoining Atletico Madrid. Unfortunately, however, the Spaniard has not been able to replicate his performances upon his return to La Liga.
In fact, Costa has scored only ten league goals in 54 matches since rejoining Atletico. Such lack of productivity has already forced the club to invest heavily on Alvaro Morata and Joao Felix, with the duo combining 18 league goals between them last season.
As for Costa, it is difficult to imagine him having a future in Madrid. He has lost his place in the squad to Morata and with Felix slowly starting to find his feet in Spain, a move away from Wanda Metropolitano makes sense.
More importantly, Atletico Madrid are facing financial difficulties after the Coronavirus put football to a halt earlier this year. The sale of Costa, therefore, is their only option at the moment.
A Good Relationship With Mourinho?
Diego Costa is certainly not the most easy-going football players in Europe, and the striker has fallen out with a host of managers throughout his career. However, Mourinho is one of the coaches who share a good relationship with the Brazil-born forward.
In fact, it was the Portuguese tactician who initially brought Costa to Chelsea back in 2014. His 20 goals in the debut season helped the Blues secure the Premier League title during the 2014/15 campaign.
Although Costa failed to replicate his scoring form in the following season, leading to the departure of Mourinho, the 31-year-old has acknowledged that the two share a good connection, which could become useful at Tottenham.
An Ideal Backup For Harry Kane?
There is no doubt that Costa is one of the most lethal and imposing centre-forwards available in the market right now. He has the experience and the pedigree of performing in the Premier League.
Moreover, the veteran striker has the physical and aerial prowess that could even help him thrive under Mourinho’s tactical philosophy. He can, therefore, be an ideal back-up for Harry Kane at Tottenham. The Atletico Madrid star can, in fact, push the Spurs number nine to fight even harder to compete and prove his own quality.
However, it remains to be seen whether or not the Lilywhites can afford Costa’s wages as they, too, have been hit by the Coronavirus. They might need to offload a couple of fringe players before they can splash the cash on the 31-year-old this summer.
