Sky Sports has recently provided an update on the future of Liverpool midfielder Harry Wilson as they mentioned that the Welsh international would only be allowed to leave permanently this summer. If not, then the Reds are expected to include Wilson in their squad for the 2020-21 campaign (via Sky Sports).
Wilson’s Impressive Loan Stay At Bournemouth Last Season
Liverpool head coach Jurgen Klopp can benefit from retaining the Welsh youngster’s services beyond this summer with the hope that he can build on his impressive loan spell at Bournemouth last season by providing some cover for the attacking positions at Anfield next season.
While on loan, Wilson quickly became a fan-favourite at the Vitality Stadium after producing several eye-catching performances under the stewardship of Eddie Howe in the recently concluded Premier League campaign. Despite suffering relegation on the last day of the league season, Wilson deserves some praise for scoring seven goals and providing two assists in 31 appearances for the Cherries in the English top-flight.
The 23-year-old was not that active on the ball as he finished the season with an average of 1.8 shots, 0.5 key passes and 0.5 dribbles per 90 minutes in the top tier of England. However, the 17-time Welsh international needs to improve his ball-distribution after completing 76% of his attempted passes in league football last season (stats via whoscored).
What Will The Welsh Playmaker Add To Jurgen Klopp’s Side?
Wilson could serve as a flexible attacker in midfield as he can play in any position across the centre of the park. He is primarily a box to box attacking midfielder but had often been utilised on the right-wing by the Cherries last season. The Welsh talent can even fill in as a left-sided wide player if needed.
Wilson has made a habit of going on tireless runs with the ball towards the opponent’s penalty area and is a potent goal-threat as he can strike the ball with a lot of power from long range. He would add some freshness and youthful exuberance to Klopp’s squad if the German tactician decides to keep him at Anfield next season.
Should The Reds Retain Wilson’s Services Beyond This Summer?
The Welsh attacker has proven himself to be capable of playing in the Premier League week in week out. If the Reds can find a suitable buyer for him and get a fair price for his services, then it makes sense for Klopp to let him go in this off-season.
However, another option for the Reds would be to keep hold of him and give him a fair chance to succeed in the upcoming campaign. With all things considered, Liverpool might be better off keeping him at Merseyside for the time being so that Wilson gets a proper shot at proving his worth for his boyhood club at the highest level. He could serve as a perfect long-term replacement for Adam Lallana, who departed Anfield to join Brighton and Hove Albion earlier this summer.
