As reported by Football Oranje, Quincy Promes has reacted to Arsenal speculations in a recent interview with NOS Sport. The Ajax winger is apparently amazed by the rumours linking him with a move to Emirates, though he did suggest that he has no plans to leave Amsterdam just yet.
“That’s a rumour, I can’t go into it. I am amazed at the interest. I have just been here a year. Everyone knows that I am happy here, I am not eager to leave”, Promes told NOS Sport.
What Do Arsenal Want Here?
Arsenal were always going to have a busy transfer window, following a promising end to the 2019/20 campaign under Mikel Arteta. Especially in the offensive department, they have already made some moves.
Willian, in particular, was brought in from Chelsea on a free transfer while the likes of Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Alexandre Lacazette have both been linked with a move away from Emirates.
The desire to sign Promes, it seems, stems from the club’s apparent plan of shifting Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang back to his familiar number nine role next season. It should open up a void at left-wing.
New signing Willian, however, is more effective on the right-hand side while Reiss Nelson has failed to live up to the expectations upon his return to Emirates last summer. It could thus pave the way for Promes to become a viable option at left-wing, although Arsenal do still have Gabriel Martinelli. In fact, Saka can also play in left-wing.
Should Arsenal Go All Out For Promes This Summer?
Three-four seasons ago, Promes was the darling of European football, having enjoyed immense success at Spartak Moscow. But, a failed move to Sevilla in 2018 tarnished his reputation, with the attacker scoring just two goals in La Liga.
However, the Dutchman, it seems, has managed to revive his career after moving to Ajax. He was notably involved in 16 Eredivisie goals in just 20 appearances this past season, helping Ajax finish at the top of the table. However, the club didn’t win the title in a season that was deemed null and void due to Coronavirus.
Promes has also managed to retain his position in the national team, featuring in most of the European qualifier games. He is, therefore, still a quality attacker, who is more than capable of performing at the highest level of football.
For Arsenal, however, the potential addition of the 28-year-old might not exactly be a prudent move. Although the Gunners will be strengthened by his arrival, they should focus more on the defensive department, where the club visibly lacks depth. A centre-back, in particular, is the need of the hour.
Arsenal, therefore, are better off without Promes, which can also allow young players like Nelson, Saka and Martinelli to gain a more prominent role in the first-team next season.
