Tutto Juve has recently mentioned that Newcastle United are prepared to launch a move for Juventus midfielder Aaron Ramsey this summer. It is understood that the Magpies are ready to offer the Welsh playmaker the same terms as his current contract with the Turin giants but with lavish bonuses as well. The Tyneside outfit are also willing to make a €20m bid to convince Juve to sell the player in this off-season (via Tutto Juve).
Ramsey’s Uneventful Season In Italian Football
It has been a debut season of underwhelming emotions for Ramsey at the Allianz Stadium as he struggled to be fruitful with his all-around displays at the centre of the park. The Welshman was involved in 35 matches for the Italian champions in the previous campaign, registering four goals and one assist in various competitions.
Ramsey’s overall impact was quite insignificant after he averaged 0.8 tackles, 0.5 interceptions, 1.2 shots, 0.8 key passes and 0.6 dribbles per game in the Serie A last season. However, he should be commended for his ball-distribution accuracy as he ended the campaign with a healthy pass completion rate of 88% in the top tier of Italian football (stats via whoscored).
The 58-time Welsh international’s lack of consistency has not been his only problem over the past 12 months as he has also missed several important matches for Juve due to multiple injuries. With so much going wrong for him in Italy, maybe Ramsey can benefit from a return to familiar surroundings in the Premier League where he has already proven his worth during his time at Arsenal.
What Will The Welsh Midfield Ace Bring To Tyneside?
Ramsey loves to go box-to-box with his runs going forward as he has got the energy to move up and down the field without breaking a sweat. The 29-year-old is a tidy distributor of the ball from midfield but has so far lacked the cutting edge in the final third at Turin. However, there is no doubting his quality on the ball and his desire to succeed at the top level.
Is Ramsey A Wise Choice For The Magpies?
Bringing in a player such as Ramsey could prove to be a risky move for the Magpies as they cannot afford to make any mistakes in the transfer market. With Steve Bruce’s squad already stretched thin as it is, the last thing Newcastle could afford right now is to fund a transfer for an underperforming player whose best years seem to be past him.
However, if Bruce is willing to put his faith on Ramsey, then he should consider offering the player an escape route by giving him a chance to re-establish himself in English football. He will bring a winning mentality to St. James’ Park that might help the Magpies push up the league table in search of a European place next season. At 29, the Welsh workhorse might still have enough left in his tank to turn his career around and prove his doubters wrong which Bruce would look to use as a motivation for the player in the coming seasons.
