It was a night of embarrassment for one of the greatest clubs in the history of football as Barcelona faced a 2-8 defeat at the hands of Bayern Munich in the quarter-final of the UEFA Champions League. Under the changed circumstances, the Blaugrana faced the German champions in the only match played between the two sides at this stage and were defeated in the worst possible manner as their defence looked absolutely in tatters and their forwards could just manage two goals in reply to Bayern’s eight.
The Bavarians went all out to get the better of Quique Setien’s men in Portugal. Thomas Muller opened the scoring in the 4th minute of the match and added another one to his tally in the 31st minute. Ivan Perisic and Serge Gnabry made it four within the first thirty minutes for the “away” team.
Barcelona pulled one back through David Alaba’s own goal as the match was well defined by then. Bayern kept pushing for more as Joshua Kimmich and Robert Lewandowski added to the embarrassment with goals in the 63rd and 82nd minutes. To add salt to injuries, on-loan Barca star Philippe Coutinho scored the last two goals in the 85th and 89th minute as Luis Suarez could add to his team’s tally with one more goal, which was too little too less for the Spanish giants.
