According to Sky Germany, as cited by Ronan Murphy, Arsenal are among clubs interested in Matthias Ginter. The Borussia Monchengladbach defender has emerged as a target for several top clubs across Europe, including the Gunners. However, they could face stiff competition from Premier League rivals in Chelsea while Italian giants inter Milan are also interested in his services.
Matthias Ginter: One of Bundesliga’s Finest Defenders
Ginter has steadily emerged as an excellent Bundesliga defender ever since his move to Borussia Monchengladbach in 2017. The Foals have been able to give the centre-back a platform to showcase his credentials at the highest level of football, something his previous club Borussia Dortmund could never do.
Ginter has built his reputation season by season. During the recently concluded 2019/20 campaign, he has been more important than ever as Gladbach finished inside the top four under new coach Marco Rose. He has flourished under the 43-year-old, who has managed to bring the best out of the ex-SC Freiburg youth player.
The German international has racked up great numbers as well, including four clearances per game. He has also won 3.1 aerial duels per game with an astounding success rate of 63%. Additionally, Ginter has attained a pass completion rate of 85% while averaging 1.5 tackles and 1.1 interceptions per game.
Is Ginter An Ideal Option For Arsenal?
Ginter could be a massive coup for Arsenal for multiple reasons. The 26-year-old can bring that discipline that is missing from the club’s current crop of defenders while he should also add a bit more physicality. However, it is his aerial prowess that should serve as a bonus for the Gunners, especially in the Premier League.
Arsenal’s shortcomings, in terms of organisation in the backline, have already been well documented. The Gladbach defender, therefore, should be a welcome addition to the club given his determination, fighting spirit and an uptight nature.
As far as fitting in is concerned, the ex-Dortmund star should be an upgrade over Shkodran Mustafi and Rob Holding. Plus, he could be an ideal partner for someone like David Luiz or William Saliba, both of who are very talented when it comes to playing the ball out from the back.
Although Ginter is not very familiar with the three-man backline, he is a fast-learner and should integrate to Mikel Arteta’s tactical philosophy in no time. However, it remains to be seen whether or not Arsenal will be able to sign the centre-back this summer given so much competition.
