According to TYC Sports, as cited by Sport Witness, Leeds United are interested in the services of Sergio Romero. The Manchester United goalkeeper has been identified as one of five Argentine players Marcelo Bielsa wants at Leeds United, following their promotion to the Premier League.
Sergio Romero’s struggles at Manchester United
Romero joined Manchester United back in 2015, in a free transfer from Sampdoria. He was brought in as a backup option for David de Gea, and while he was never really expected to receive regular game-time, his spell at Old Trafford has been no less than a misery.
Indeed, Romero has made only 59 appearances for Manchester United during his ongoing five-year spell at Manchester United, with most of those appearances coming in domestic or European cut competitions. In fact, the Argentine international has not appeared in a single Premier League game this season.
Despite the apparent decline of de Gea, it seems unlikely that Romero will get a more prominent role in the first-team anytime soon. With his contract expiring in 2021, a move away from Old Trafford might be the best option for the 33-year-old.
Why Leeds United should sign Romero
Leeds United must address a host of problems this summer if they are to thrive in the Premier League next season. One of those areas is the goalkeeping department, with first-choice ‘keeper Kiko Casilla often being labelled as too mediocre.
Even in the Championship, the Spaniard has been criticized for making individual errors and has not been able to instil confidence in between the sticks. In that regard, second choice ‘keeper Illan Meslier has done a fantastic job.
However, the Frenchman might struggle to cope with the physical nature of the Premier League, especially given his timid figure as well as the lack of experience at the highest level of football, and that’s where Romero comes into the fray.
The Manchester United star is a seasoned professional, and despite his lack of game-time, he can offer the much-needed experience in between the Leeds goal. Moreover, the Argentine international has impressed the onlookers whenever he has played and is only bound to improve at Elland Road, where he would presumably be considered as the first-choice ‘keeper.
Hence, Romero and Leeds United seem like a good fit as the Whites look to strengthen their squad in what will be a busy summer transfer window.
