According to TYC Sports, as cited by Sport Witness, Leeds United are interested in Nicolas Gonzalez. The VfB Stuttgart attacker is among the players listed in Marcelo Bielsa’s transfer wishlist as the Whites manager looks to build his squad around Argentine players next season, after sealing promotion to the Premier League.
Who is Nicolas Gonzalez?
A product of the Argentinos Jrs. youth academy, Gonzalez initially joined Stuttgart in 2018, for a fee of €8.5 million. He was brought in to provide more bite into the VfB attack, but the club was eventually relegated, with the striker scoring two goals in 30 matches.
This season, however, Gonzalez has made quite a mark in 2.Bundesliga, netting 14 goals in 27 matches. His contributions in front of goal were critical as Die Schwaben finished second, behind Arminia Bielefeld and secured their promotion back to the Bundesliga next season.
As far as his gameplay is concerned, Gonzalez is advertised as a modern-day centre-forward. Blessed with pace and technical prowess, the Argentine can effortlessly dribble past opposing defenders and is not shy when it comes to tracking back and taking part in the approach play. His quick feet, in that regard, helps him squeeze through tight spaces.
In fact, Gonzalez can easily be compared to Liverpool star Roberto Firmino is terms of playing style and the fact that he has already built a strong connection with the likes of Silas Wamangituka and Philipp Forster is enough to highlight that.
Is Nicolas Gonzalez a viable target for Leeds United?
Gonzalez is, no doubt, one of the most promising players in the second division of German football and is tipped to make a big impact in the Bundesliga next season. However, his lack of experience at the highest level of football makes him a risky target for Leeds United, especially considering the fact that the Whites already have a similar centre forward in Patrick Bamford.
Although the ex-Chelsea starlet has also failed to impress in top-flight football in his career so far, his similarity with Gonzalez means the Argentine will bring very little variety in the Leeds United attack.
Therefore, it would perhaps be a better idea for Bielsa to set his sights on other alternatives, preferably someone who can provide the physical presence in the final third. But one thing is for sure – the Whites must make some moves in the market if they are to have any hopes of surviving in top-flight football next season.
