According to a recent report by The Chronicle, Newcastle United are keeping a keen eye on Motherwell midfielder David Turnbull this summer. The same source has also mentioned that the Magpies have checked him out on quite a few occasions in the recently concluded Scottish Premiership campaign.
Turnbull’s Injury-Ravaged Season At Fir Park
Turnbull has endured a tough spell at Motherwell as he has struggled to battle his way back to the first-team since undergoing a knee surgery. He has only made two league appearances for the Scottish outfit this term, playing a total of 36 minutes in the process.
Only time will tell whether he has what it takes to make a successful comeback and become a regular feature at the highest level. The Scottish playmaker rose to prominence for his impressive performances in the 2018-19 season when he registered 16 goals and seven assists in 34 appearances for Motherwell in all competitions.
Therefore, it is no surprise that a top club like Newcastle are keeping tabs on his progress ahead of a potential move in the future. Turnbull has also represented Scotland at various youth levels, but is yet make a senior appearance for his country.
What Will The Scottish Midfield Ace Bring To The Table?
Turnbull is a well-rounded player as he can do a bit of everything at the centre of the park. He has decent pace in his locker and can make some driving runs with the ball from midfield. The Scottish midfielder proved himself to be a consistent goal-scorer in the previous campaign. However, the jury is still out on whether he can have a similar impact in the Premier League if the Magpies end up sealing a move for him this summer.
Is Turnbull The Right Choice For The Magpies?
The 21-year-old has the potential to be a top-level midfielder, but he still has a long way to go before he is ready to feature in the English top-flight week in week out. Recruiting an up-and-coming talent like Turnbull could prove to be a shrewd move for the Tyneside outfit in the long-run. He will not only add some goals and creativity to Steve Bruce’s midfield, but also improve the overall depth of his squad.
Furthermore, Turnbull will offer some much-needed competition for the likes of Jonjo Shelvey, Isaac Hayden, Matty Longstaff and Sean Longstaff at St. James’ Park next season. All in all, the Scottish youngster will be a decent choice for Bruce as he will strengthen his squad so that the Magpies can compete across all competitions in the coming years.
