According to The Times, Tottenham Hotspur are interested in the services of Demarai Gray. The Leicester City winger has emerged as the latest target for the north London giants as they look to bolster their attacking department. It is believed that Gray could be available for a cut-price this summer, putting Tottenham on red alert.
Demarai Gray’s struggle under Brendan Rodgers
Gray was always regarded as one of the most talented players at Leicester City ever since he joined the club back in 2016. However, he has never really managed to establish himself as a full-fledged member of the first-team. In fact, the winger is yet to muster over 2,000 minutes of league football in any of his four seasons with the club.
Gray’s struggles have worsened under current manager Brendan Rodgers. The ex-Liverpool boss has often preferred players like Ayoze Perez and Harvey Barnes in the wider attacking positions, primarily due to the fact that they have appeared more likely to provide the productivity going forward.
As a result, the former Birmingham City starlet has notched up just under 600 minutes of league football, which is clearly unacceptable for a player of his calibre.
Is Gray An Ideal Option For Tottenham Hotspur?
Despite Gray’s struggles at Leicester City, he is undoubtedly one of the most gifted wingers in the team – someone who is capable of becoming an asset in the Premier League.
Having said that, Tottenham Hotspur’s interest in Gray still seems rather bizarre, given the fact that they already have a lot of depth in the wider attacking department. In fact, the Lilywhites signed Steven Bergwijn in the January transfer window, to provide additional competition to the likes of Son Heung-Min, Ryan Sessegnon and Lucas Moura.
Although it is fair to point out that both Lucas and Sessegnon have not been able to live up to their potential at Tottenham, the same can be said for Gray as well.
One could argue that the 24-year-old’s dynamism and pace should tune in well with Jose Mourinho’s counter-attacking style of play. But at the same time, his lack of game-time, combined with the club’s stacked offensive unit, clearly doesn’t make Tottenham, an ideal destination for the player.
Even for Spurs, it would perhaps be wiser for them to shift their interest elsewhere, particularly in the defensive unit as players like Jan Vertonghen and Juan Foyth face an uncertain future at the club.
