According to The Athletic (subscription needed), Tottenham Hotspur are confident in keeping hold of Japhet Tanganga. The young academy defender, who has made his breakthrough earlier this year, reportedly earns only £1,000 a week. Although talks regarding a new contract have stalled, Spurs are confident of offering him a significant increase in his salary and ultimately keeping hold of Tanganga, who is also keen on staying at the club.
What Does Japhet Tanganga Bring To The Table?
A product of the Tottenham youth academy, Tanganga has been one of the bright spots in an otherwise dire campaign for Jose Mourinho’s men. After initially making his debut earlier in the year, he has gone on to make 13 appearances in all competitions so far.
Tanganga has shown impressive composure, even at the highest level of football. It has been evident in his performances against Liverpool and Southampton, earlier this year and is indicative of the defender’s maturity that is well beyond his years.
A centre-back by trade, 21-year-old is naturally good at physical and aerial duels, partly thanks to his 1.84m frame. But, what makes him such an interesting prospect is his discipline. Unlike most other young promising defenders, Tanganga is more than capable of keeping up with his markers.
Another key characteristic in the defender’s game is his versatility. Indeed, the Tottenham star can play anywhere across the defensive line, making him an appealing young prospect for the Lilywhites.
WhyTanganga could be vital for Spurs
Tottenham Hotspur have lacked quality and consistency in their defence this season. The defensive combination of Toby Alderweireld and Davinson Sanchez have had a mixed campaign, often failing to put up a solid run of performances.
Meanwhile, Spurs have also lacked depth, particularly in the fullback department. The summer departure of Kieran Trippier notably left Serge Aurier as the only option at right-back. The same can be said for Ben Davies as well, although coach Mourinho has sometimes utilised Jan Vertonghen in that role.
Tanganga, in that regard, should open up a host of tactical possibilities at his disposal as he can provide cover for both Aurier and Davies whilst offering an added incentive for Sanchez to fight for his place in the starting lineup.
Also, the 21-year-old can be an ideal replacement for the ageing Vertonghen, who is expected to leave the club following the end of his contract. Hence, it could be imperative for Tottenham Hotspur to tie Tanganga down to a long-term deal this summer.
