In a recent interview with Marca, following Real Madrid‘s crowning as the new La Liga champions yesterday, Florentino Perez ruled out making any major signings this summer. The Madrid president said (via Marca), “The situation is very bad and it is very difficult to ask the players to lower their wages whilst making big money transfers.
“Future signings of that nature will have to wait, but as soon as we can Real Madrid will start making those kinds of signings again.
“Unfortunately, we don’t know when we will be able to make these signings because of the difficult situation we find ourselves in.
“We lost 25 percent of income with regards to the stadium.”
Does Los Blancos Need To Strengthen This Summer?
Los Blancos clinched the league title yesterday with a 2-1 win over Villarreal. Now Zinedine Zidane will have to find a way to inspire his players to make a second-leg comeback against Manchester City when the UEFA Champions League’s knockout stages resume next month. It would take a mammoth effort from the Spanish giants to keep their European hopes alive.
At the same time, Real Madrid’s excellent form in domestic football following the season’s restart last month should serve as a proof that they once again have what it takes to compete at the highest level. Zidane has got Karim Benzema firing again up top while the defensive partnership between Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane has been solid over the past few weeks.
However, there is no denying that the Spanish giants have an ageing squad with Ramos, Benzema, Marcelo and Luka Modric all edging closer towards the twilight years of their playing careers. Hence, Zidane would have benefitted a lot from strengthening his squad this summer so that he would have had a strong squad capable of retaining the La Liga crown next season.
Perez Rules Out Making Any Major Signings: How Can Zidane Cope With Such Predicament?
The recent COVID-19 crisis has brought up a significant change in the economic structure of a lot of football clubs across European football, and Real Madrid are no exception. Perez’s recent words will serve as a reminder of the harsh reality that football clubs are currently facing in their battle to reign supreme at the top level.
Zidane will now have to find a way to develop young talent so that he can keep things fresh in his squad. The likes of Vinicius Junior, Rodrygo, Andriy Lunin, Brahim Díaz and Takefusa Kubo have shown some signs of progress over the past ten months. Maybe it’s time for Madrid to give them more game time in the coming seasons so that they can reach their full potential and become a household name in the Spanish capital someday.
The Real Madrid head coach could also focus on getting the best out of Eden Hazard and Reinier following their recent arrivals at the Santiago Bernabeu. With all things considered, Zidane has enough strength in depth in his squad to cope with the dire predicament of not making any major signings this summer. However, he will have to figure out a way to get the best out of his current players if he wants to reign supreme in Europe once again in the upcoming campaign.
