Bayern Munich are one of the few clubs who still have a chance of landing a treble this season. They have recently secured their eighth successive Bundesliga title while also winning the DFK Pokal. And despite having Champions League just around the corner, the Bavarians have started their preparation for the next season.
In this article, we will talk about three problems Bayern Munich need to address this summer if they are to maintain their dominance over German football in the upcoming campaign.
Keep Hold Of Thiago Alcantara
Thiago Alcantara has once again become a talking point in the transfer market this summer. The Spaniard is reportedly facing an uncertain future in Bavaria amid strong interest from Liverpool. Bayern Munich are trying to sign him on a long-term deal but are not very hopeful.
That could serve as a massive blow for the Bavarians given the fact that Thiago is arguably the best midfielder in the Bundesliga. His technical prowess, understanding and ability to create chances make him an indispensable figure in the number eight slot for Hansi Flick.
Moreover, Bayern don’t really have a reliable alternative either, with Corentin Tolisso struggling with injuries while Javi Martinez is nearing the final phase of his career. Even new signing Mickael Cuisance has not been able to make a breakthrough since joining from Borussia Monchengladbach.
Hence, keeping hold of Thiago for the long-term should become Bayern Munich’s primary objective this summer as they look to preserve their efficiency in the middle of the park.
Sign Another Defender
Bayern Munich were extremely lucky with the emergence of Alphonso Davies as well as the revelation of David Alaba at centre-back. In fact, the Austrian international is most likely to be considered as a central defender while coach Flick is also set to be boosted by the return of Niklas Sule.
At the same time, however, the Bavarians do need a replacement for the ageing Jerome Boateng. The defender’s contract expires at the end of next season while last summer’s marquee signing Lucas Hernandez has not been able to make an impact. That leaves Flick with only two viable long-term defensive options at centre-back.
Although Bayern did sign PSG whizkid Tanguy Kouassi recently, securing the services of a more experienced and proven individual should go a long way in further strengthen the backline this summer.
Who’s Next After Robert Lewandowski?
Robert Lewandowski is, no doubt, one of the most dangerous strikers in world football. The Bayern Munich forward has attained an incredible record since joining from Borussia Dortmund in 2014. His excellent track record and exploits in front of goal have helped the Bavarians maintain their dominance over German football over the past six years.
However, the Pole is slowly nearing the final phase of his career. Although he hasn’t yet shown any signs of decline, it would perhaps be wiser for Bayern Munich to sign a long-term replacement.
Joshua Zirkzee, for one, is making a strong impression while Jann Fiete Arp has not been able to do the same. Both of them, however, lack experience at the highest level of football, and it will be interesting to see how Bayern manage to deal with his problem this summer.
