According to a recent interview by Austrian source Kleine Zeitung, as has been translated in a report by the Daily Record, Premiership giants Celtic are said to have registered an offer for the services of Wolfsberger AC’s Shon Weissman this summer. The report suggests that the club have denied making an offer, but Wolfsberger chief Ditmar Riegler insists that one of the offers that came in for the striker was from the Glasgow outfit. It has further been claimed that the Celts are looking for a new striker to compete with Odsonne Edouard and Leigh Griffiths.
Not only did Riegler clarify that Celtic have placed an offer for Shon Weissman, he further confirmed that the forward’s intentions were to find a move to one of the bigger leagues. Speaking to Kleine Zeitung, the Wolfsberger representative said, “As you already know, he wants to go to Germany or England. Here, however, we still have no inquiries. Offers came from Russia or Scotland, among others, from Glasgow Celtic. Because of the Corona crisis, everything is different this year. The seasons in Germany have now ended. The clubs know where they will play in the coming season. I think the next few days will be interesting for Shon.”
Do Celtic Need To Bring In A New Striker For Next Season?
The Celts finished the last season in a pretty comfortable position atop the league table, and a lot of that was down to the scoring form being displayed by their French talisman Odsonne Edouard.
The former PSG striker has been nothing short of a revelation up front, and his presence has come as an un-quantifiable boost to Neil Lennon’s ambitions with the Scottish heavyweights. The French youth international scored 21 times from his 27 league appearances and provided a further 12 assists along the way as well.
The Bhoys started the campaign with Edouard operating as the lone striker, but when things weren’t going their way, Lennon switched things up and went with a front-two including Leigh Griffiths as well. The pair of Celtic forwards formed a good partnership, but competition for places was never really at a premium at Parkhead. Despite the presence of young Patryk Klimala as well, there’s no denying that the addition of a proven goalscorer like Weissman, who can compete with Edouard, would bring the best out of both players.
What Makes Shon Weissman A Good Option For Celtic?
The 24-year-old has been tearing things up in the Austrian Bundesliga this season, and it hasn’t come as a surprise that he has caught the Glasgow club’s eyes. The forward boasts excellent predatory instincts in and around the box, and he possesses sensational finishing abilities as well. Despite not being the biggest striker, the Israel international isn’t afraid to put himself about and even challenge opposition defenders in aerial situations. The striker’s numbers for the campaign read 37 goals from 40 matches for Wolfsberger AC across all competitions.
Celtic Have Placed An Offer For Shon Weissman: Will Lennon Be Able To Sign Him?
Although the Wolfsberger representative has said that the forward is keen on moving to either England or Germany, the prospect of joining Celtic certainly has it’s merits. The Bhoys are extremely close to their tenth straight league title, and playing a part in such a memorable season would see his name entered into the club’s history books forever.
Moreover, moving to Scotland would not only act as a gateway to an eventual Premier League switch but would also allow him to test out the waters before jumping into the gritty nature of English football. Whether or not Edouard is a Celtic player, next season could have an important part to play in how hard the Parkhead club push for this signing to be done. Still, even if things do go in their favour in terms of the Frenchman, it would be silly to pass up on an opportunity to snap up such a prolific goalscorer.
