The Premier League season has been a mixed one so far this season for Tottenham Hotspur. The tag of being ‘the Invincible’ side so far is also a facade in disguise, as they find themselves in the fifth spot in the league table, five points behind league leaders Liverpool. They have been off their pace lately and even their own fans would not hesitate to admit it.
The North London outfit have been suffering from the dearth of creativity or ruthlessness up front the way they possessed last season under the tutelage of Mauricio Pochettino, although they are still not very far away from the vicinity of the summit of the league table. However, the scenario could have been a lot more positively inclined towards Spurs, had they acquired the services of German international, Max Meyer in the summer transfer window.
Without any shadow of a doubt, Meyer is one of the most sensational attacking midfielders known to the football fraternity at this point of time. The 21-year-old operates with lightning pace which comes along with his perfect first touches and prolific dribbling skills (which he derived by playing Futsal where heavier balls are used). The Royal Blue attacker reads the game brilliantly, times his runs precisely and has imposed himself as a crucial go-to element in Schalke’s lineup.
Despite his tender age, Meyer has already accumulated over a century of appearances for Schalke and has also bagged four national caps which speak of his scintillating talent and knack to demolish the opponents and make them fall on their knees. Markus Weinzierl’s tactical nous holds Meyer as a key figure and reciprocally, the manager has been satisfied with the way the youngster has consistently delivered whenever he has been called upon.
In a total of 9 appearances (most of which were from the bench), Meyer has scored a goal and has created 6 chances. He holds the ball really well and finds the right passes and that is reflected in his average pass accuracy of 90%. Lately, the Schalke midfielder had admitted that the Lilywhites were interested in signing him in the summer transfer window.
The deal could not hit the chord but it would not be surprising to see Pochettino aiming for Meyer in the January transfer window. Of course, he suffers, defensively speaking, right from making tackles to aerial duels but considering the age and the talent he is, he can take his level to a whole new dimension under the Argentine gaffer at London.
The sensational German has, however, seen himself fall in the pecking order (being operated basically as a substitute) at Schalke at the moment and thus, it definitely seems like the move shall benefit all the three parties involved and Tottenham will recruit him with open and mould him into a world-class superstar in the near future.
