Steve Bruce’s Newcastle United side faced their first league defeat since the resumption of football, as they were handed a 5-0 thrashing by second-placed Manchester City. The former champions were in the ascendancy for the entirety of the fixture, and the Magpies’ forwards didn’t have any say in the proceedings tonight. The Tyneside club were forced to face wave after wave of Manchester City attacks, and at the end of the tie, only managed to produce a single shot on target.

Martin Dubravka – 5.5
The stopper made a couple of decent saves in the second half, and wasn’t directly to blame for any of the open-play goals. Should’ve positioned himself better against the free-kick though.
DeAndre Yedlin – 5
The American speedster had an extremely strenuous outing down the right flank tonight as he was up against the in-form Phil Foden. The two first-half goals both came down his end.
Emil Krafth – 4
Using a makeshift full-back against this Manchester City side was always going to be a problem, and Krafth was given a first-hand experience of just that tonight. Didn’t position himself very well.
Fabian Schar – 6
The Swiss centre-half didn’t apply his usual physicality in the heart of defence, and was constantly being troubled by the movement of Gabriel Jesus. Some good clearances, and charged forward as well.
Federico Fernandez – 5
The centre-half was caught out of position on a couple of occasions during the tie, but delivered some important blocks in the box. Gave away the own goal and didn’t look overly comfortable.
Danny Rose – 6
The Englishman tried to keep Riyad Mahrez in check, but was given a torrid time by the City trickster. Made some important challenges and looked the best of all the Magpies’ defenders tonight.
Valentino Lazaro – 5.5
The versatile winger struggled to have any sort of impact on the fixture, as the Manchester City attackers ran riot on the Newcastle back-line. Forced to do a lot of defending and didn’t offer too much.
Jonjo Shelvey – 5
The Englishman was nothing more than a spectator all through the first-half, as the City forward seemed to be completely bypassing the Newcastle midfield line. Tracked back but to no real effect.
Nabil Bentaleb – 5.5
The midfielder tried to get on the ball and make things happen, but was constantly pressured by the tireless Manchester City attackers. Helped out in defence and cleared a couple of set-pieces.
Matt Ritchie – 5.5
The veteran winger, like the rest of the Magpies squad, was required to do most of his work off the ball. Didn’t have his usual influence in the final third, but worked hard against Mahrez’s trickery.
Joelinton – 5
The Brazilian striker wasn’t able to offer anything in the Manchester City half tonight, as he struggled to even hold the ball up when they cleared it. Spent a lot of his time helping out at the back.

Javi Manquillo – 5.5
The Spaniard tried to get forward on every possible opportunity, but keeping with the general trend of the game, spent a majority of his time on the pitch back defending.
Matty Longstaff – 5.5
Didn’t have the impact in midfield that Steve Bruce was hoping for when he threw him onto the field of play in the second half. Some neat passes but not enough to affect the tie.
Dwight Gayle – 5
The Englishman didn’t have the space or time to do anything when he got the ball, and his introduction into proceedings had no effect on the match whatsoever.
