Manchester City entertained the new Premier League champions, Liverpool, at the Etihad Stadium earlier this evening hoping to pick up a win at home. The Citizens began the contest on the front foot and took the lead via Kevin De Bruyne’s penalty in the 25th minute. Raheem Sterling doubled the home team’s advantage from close range just ten minutes later. Phil Foden put daylight between the two sides just before half-time when he scored with a chipped effort.
The second half was more of the same with Man City looking threatening on the counter. The Citizens scored another via Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s own goal to cap off a dominant 4-0 victory on the day.
Let’s take a look at how each Man City player fared during the match against the Reds.
GK: Ederson – 7/10
The Brazilian keeper made some crucial clearances at the back but didn’t have too many saves to make during the game.
RB: Kyle Walker – 7/10
The English full-back dealt with Sadio Mane’s pace quite well but didn’t get forward too often. It was a solid performance from him today.
CB: Eric Garcia – 7/10
The Man City centre-back had a few nervy moments but did well to secure a well-deserved clean sheet.
CB: Aymeric Laporte – 7.5/10
He bossed the game inside his penalty box and led his defence well to earn a shutout from the contest.
LB: Benjamin Mendy – 7/10
The French left-back tracked Mohamed Salah’s runs quite well and maintained a good shape throughout the match.
CM: Rodri – 7/10
He helped his teammates dominate the midfield battles and was mostly excellent during the game.
CM: Ilkay Gundogan – 7.5/10
The German playmaker retained possession well and distributed the ball with ease and grace in the opposition half. He had a terrific game at the centre of the park and was a joy to watch.
RW: Phil Foden – 9/10
The English youngster played a fantastic pass in the lead-up to Sterling’s goal and showed outstanding composure to score with a chipped finish just before half-time. He also had some bright moments in the second 45 minutes.
CAM: Kevin De Bruyne – 9/10
The Belgian midfielder produced another magical display for his team as he scored one via a penalty and set-up another goal in the first half which all but ended the contest. He was arguably the best player on the pitch this evening.
LW: Raheem Sterling – 8/10
Sterling had some bright moments during the game and got his name on the scoresheet with a classy finish from close range.
ST: Gabriel Jesus – 6/10
The Brazilian striker worked hard but lacked the cutting edge in the final third.
Substitutes:
RW: Riyad Mahrez – 6/10
The Algerian was unfortunate to see his goal ruled out by VAR in the dying embers of the match.
RB: Joao Cancelo – 6/10
He did enough to see out the win with the clean sheet intact.
