Barcelona came into the match against Celta Vigo knowing that they needed a win to keep pace with Real Madrid. With Sergio Busquets missing from action, the Catalans had a tough job at hand.
Barcelona drew the game 2-2 after going in front twice, courtesy of two Luis Suarez goals. The Uruguayan provided his team with the advantage more than once, but the defence let the side down. Now, it would be challenging for the team to get back into the title race with Atletico in the next game.
Barcelona players rated in draw versus Celta Vigo
Marc-André ter Stegen- 6
The German made an error at the early stages of the game which could have proved costly, but eventually made a couple of decent saves to deny the visitors. However, he shares the blame for the inept wall that let in the second Celta goal.
Samuel Umtiti- 5
The French defender got a rare start, but could not rise to the occasion. Could not spot the runs of the opposition strikers at times, thus making the side vulnerable.
Gerard Piqué- 3
The central defender had a horrific night. Initially, due to his defensive disorganization, the opposition got several chances to score and eventually his needless and mistimed challenge led to the free-kick from which Aspas scored the second goal.
Nélson Semedo- 7
The right-back did little in the defence, but his movement at the front reminded the onlookers of Dani Alves.
Jordi Alba- 6
Did nothing to catch the eye of the management throughout his time on the pitch.
Ivan Rakitić- 6
The Croat was doing well at the defensive midfield position at the initial stages of the match. However, it was his pass that was intercepted by the opposition, leading to the first Celta goal.
Arturo Vidal- 6
The veteran midfielder showed little creativity on the pitch and could not help the team with his passing or forward thrusts.
Riqui Puig- 8.5
The youngster got his first start in a Barcelona shirt and impressed everyone with his industrious performance. Displayed ample creativity, and after today, the Barca management would hope that he becomes the long term solution to their midfield problems.
Ansu Fati- 7
Provided some raw pace from the left-hand side, although there was an apparent lack of end product.
Luis Suarez- 9
The Uruguayan scored two goals for his side, which would give him a lot of confidence. Although, he was not involved in too many situations throughout the match, but was at the right time at the right place. The second goal was the product of a precise finishing which reminded us of the former Suarez.
Lionel Messi- 8
A timid performance compared to Messi’s standards. He assisted the first goal and also produced a few incisive passes. However, he had probably left his shooting boots at his home and squandered some clear chances from outside the penalty box.
Substitutes
Junior Firpo- 6.5
Made a few decent runs from the flanks which should have been better used by the forwards.
Martin Braithwaite- 5
Made a rough challenge to get a yellow card. Other than that, did nothing remarkable.
Antoine Griezmann- 4
Absolutely invisible throughout the period he stayed on the field. Would be extremely surprised to see him the side next season after these kinds of performances.
Arthur Melo- NA
Came on as a late substitute. Failed to make much impact on the game.
