Tottenham Hotspur failed to restart their 2019/20 Premier League campaign on a positive note, playing out a 1-1 draw with Manchester United. The Lilywhites had scored the opener in the first-half through a brilliant solo effort from Steven Bergwijn and were willing to see out the game. But, a penalty conceded by Eric Dier late in the game saw Bruno Fernandes score the equaliser.

An unbelievable save to deny Manchester United from scoring in the second half was the highlight of Hugo Lloris’ performances in this tight contest. The Frenchman looked pretty confident and stepped up to the plate whenever needed, aside from the penalty from Fernandes.
Serge Aurier 6.5/10
It was a mixed performance from Serge Aurier, who looked bright, at times, especially when attacking the opposition with his darting runs into the final third. In fact, he played a crucial role in the counter-attack that led to the opener. But, at the same time, the Ivorian was sloppy and lost possession in vital moments.
Davinson Sanchez 8/10
A top-class defensive effort from Davinson Sanchez. The young centre-back responded well despite the absence of experienced figureheads like Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen. His commitment and discipline helped Tottenham almost keep the Man United attack at bay.
Eric Dier 7.5/10
Eric Dier was one of Tottenham’s best performers up until the 80th minute when he made a silly foul on Paul Pogba that led to a clear cut penalty. Aside from that, the English international was reasonably solid, despite struggling with his decision making at times.
Ben Davies 7/10
Ben Davies might have preferred a more attack-oriented approach, especially in the first half. The fullback was forced to remain in his half most of the times, defending the attacking onslaught from Man United.
Moussa Sissoko 8.5/10
A top, hard-working display from Moussa Sissoko, who covered a lot of ground and cut off numerous passing lanes in midfield. The Frenchman’s aggression, physicality and work-ethic is something Tottenham have lacked throughout the entirety of the year so far.
Harry Winks 7.5/10
Harry Winks complemented the effort of Sissoko with a well-rounded display. The young midfielder caught the eye in transitional phases, although he would have preferred much more freedom.
Steven Bergwijn 7.5/10
A mesmerising piece of individual skill from Bergwijn was exactly what was needed for Tottenham to earn a crucial lead. But even aside from his goal, the Dutchman was willing to work hard for his team and was producing dangerous balls into the box. His influence, however, faded as time wore on.
Erik Lamela 7/10
It was a hard-working display from Erik Lamela. The Argentine started in the number ten role and got in good positions, showcasing excellent hold-up play. He also moved up the pitch, partnering Harry Kane in the first line of the press, making Spurs much more versatile without the ball.
Son Heung-Min 7.5/10
Son Heung-Min’s nimble footwork and intelligent positioning were crucial in Tottenham’s transition game. The South Korean ace was seen tracking back numerous times while his vision helped him switch the play, making it difficult for Man United to regroup themselves. Failed to penetrate the opposing backline, however.
Harry Kane 6/10
It was a quiet game for Harry Kane, who was barely given any sort of pace by the Manchester United defender. However, he did track back at times and was willing to work hard for his team.
SUBSTITUTES
Giovani Lo Celso 7/10
Replaced Lamela during the final phase of the game and looked menacing whenever he had the ball. The Argentine was particularly dangerous with the quick footwork that enabled him to dazzle past the United defenders. Should have been brought on earlier in the proceedings.
Gedson Fernandes 5/10
A late replacement for Bergwijn but made a minimal impact on the game.
