According to a recent report by Bild, Chelsea are on the verge of sealing a move for Red Bull Leipzig centre-forward Timo Werner this summer. The same source has claimed that the Blues could complete the signing of the German striker ‘in the next few days’ after agreeing to match the player’s €53m release clause. It is believed that the Bundesliga sensation has no plans to represent Leipzig in the UEFA Champions League later this year and is prepared ‘pack his bags and move to London’ once the league campaign comes to a close on June 27th (via Bild).
Werner’s Sensational Form At Leipzig This Season
Werner has enjoyed another outstanding campaign at the Red Bull Arena after producing several match-winning performances as the focal point of Julian Nagelsmann’s attack. He has featured in 42 matches for the German outfit this term, netting 31 goals and providing 13 assists on all fronts which showcases his excellent run of form in the final third.
The Stuttgart-born marksman is one of the most consistent goal-scorers in European football at the moment based on his average of 3.7 shots, 1.6 key passes and 1.6 dribbles per game in the Bundesliga and the UEFA Champions League this season (stats via whoscored).
The 24-year-old has got an incredible record for the German national team at the international stage after banging in 11 goals in 29 senior appearances for his country thus far. Werner will be nailed-on to secure a place in Joachim Low’s squad for next year’s UEFA European Championship finals following the competition’s postponement due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
What Will The German Frontman Bring To The Table?
Werner can use his electric pace and agility to make some well-timed runs behind the last line of the opposition defence. He excels at dribbling with the ball and can cause all sorts of problems for his marker in the attacking third. The German international has transformed himself into a prolific goal-getter over the past few years. At 24, he is yet to hit the peak years of his playing career, so it is quite likely that he will only get better and better in the coming seasons.
Will Werner Be A Dream Signing For Lampard?
A proven striker of Werner’s skillset and quality will undeniably be a massive coup for the Blues and could serve as a boost to their long-term ambitions as a football club. He will not only add plenty of goals and creativity to Frank Lampard’s attack but also enhance the overall quality of his first-team at Stamford Bridge. However, his arrival could hamper the progress of Tammy Abraham, who has enjoyed a wonderful breakout season at West London so far.
If Werner can maintain his high standards in the Premier League next season, then he might turn out to be a dream acquisition for Chelsea in the long-run. Lampard will fancy his chances of getting the best out of him once the striker completes the highly-anticipated switch to the English capital this summer.
