A source in Belgium told me that the Pro League will try to convince all clubs to finish the final matchday in order to avoid further legal proceedings.
Apparently, while we were focussing more on Waasland-Beveren and the situation in the top tier which has been good news for Waasland-Beveren, it has been an absolute shitshow in the lower tiers. Every club left right and centre is claiming that they are entitled to get promoted, and want to change the league format again.
Let us take the example of Westerlo. The Pro League had decided that if the promotion play-offs’ second leg between OHL and Beerschot can’t be played, Westerlo gets promoted because they have accumulated most point during both halves of the league (although they normally had 0% chance for gaining promotion).
Westerlo now claims that all Pro League’s decisions are invalid because FIFA has overruled one decision: they don’t allow new players to play in the second leg, although the Pro League decided clubs could do so. Westerlo now claims that, because a lot of OHL players are out of contract on 1st of July, a fair match is not possible and thus they should get promoted (If all this is too confusing and you want a full context then read this column written by Broken Belgian Football Supporter on 26th May, 2020).
According to Westerlo, since the decision was an “all-in” package, they claim all decisions within that package are invalid. From what I am hearing, other clubs have similar demands and that was one of the reasons why the decision to hold the ‘general assembly’ was postponed until 29th June 2020. Now, it seems there are some discussions going within the Board of Directors about a plan to resume the leagues again. They believe that this would avoid the complications that have arisen so far. However, honestly, it would not be easy to find the majority of votes yet again.
