During an interview with Football Insider, Noel Whelan has backed Leeds United to sign Harry Wilson. He believes that the Liverpool star, who joined Bournemouth on loan summer, could be an exciting addition to Marcelo Bielsa’s side as they look to bolster their offensive unit. Whelen even believes that after previous unsuccessful attempts of signing Wilson, Leeds could be third time lucky in their pursuit of the attacker this summer.
Harry Wilson’s spell at Bournemouth
After successful loan spells at Derby County and Hull City, Wilson has continued his excellent run of form at Bournemouth this season. He has managed to score seven goals in 23 league matches so far, playing a key role for a Bournemouth side which have shown a lot of promise in the attack.
Especially with Ryan Fraser missing a chunk of the season due to injury, Wilson’s presence in the side has been critical. He has built a strong offensive partnership with the likes of Callum Wilson and Joshua King, even though it hasn’t been enough to keep the Cherries out of the relegation battle.
What can he bring to the table?
A right-winger by trade, Wilson is a proactive attacker. Unlike most other wingers, the Liverpool star rarely fails to get himself involved in the game. He has an impeccable tactical awareness that allows him to navigate his side’s creative play. It is combined with an excellent positional sense that makes him a well-rounded forward.
Those qualities mentioned above also make Wilson a competent goalscoring forward. The Welshman was scoring goals for fun in the Championship, and he has replicated that form in the Premier League as well.
Is Wilson a good fit for Leeds?
Wilson could emerge as a potential solution to Leeds United’s attacking problems next season. The Whites have struggled with the lack of productivity from the main striker Patrick Bamford.
However, the ex-Chelsea starlet’s technical prowess and work-rate should combine well with an equally useful presence of Wilson. While the goalscoring prowess of the latter will help Leeds make full use of their limited scoring opportunities in the Premier League, Bamford’s desire to influence the build-up will be important in creating a flawless offensive system for Marcelo Bielsa’s side.
Over the past few years, Wilson, with his consistent performances, has been able to convince the onlookers that he is ready for the highest level of football. And Leeds should be able to provide him with that opportunity as the Welshman seeks to take the next step in his career this summer.
