The Scottish Premiership is already over, and the clubs have no other option but to look forward to the next season. Amid this waiting, the clubs are gearing up for the transfer market and Motherwell plan to let a lot of their players leave in the summer.
Goalkeeper Mark Gillespie is also set to depart the team, and now there is news by Chronicle that the club would let him talk to Newcastle United for a potential transfer. The Magpies have also included the keeper’s name in their shortlist, during a time when their takeover bid has been going through some hiccups.
The return of Mark Gillespie
The English goalkeeper was born in the city of Newcastle, and as a natural choice joined Newcastle United as a youth player. However, in 2008 he moved to Carlisle United in the youth set up and after a couple of seasons joined the first team. The next seven years of his life were spent at Carlisle manning the goal, eventually making 161 league appearances for the side.
From 2012-13 season onwards, he became a regular in the first team and ultimately moved to Walsall in 2017. After a single season with the club, the 28-year-old was eventually snapped by Motherwell, where he has been plying his trade since.
Gillespie made 57 appearances for the Well over the past two seasons and was the number one choice under the sticks. The club’s qualification into the Europa League this season has been helped by the performances of Gillespie and the English footballer would end his spell in Scotland on a high note.
What should Newcastle United do?
If the proposed takeover goes through, then one can certainly expect the Toon to rope in more prominent stars. With that in mind, Gillespie cannot wish for a starting berth week in week out. However, he would be a capable deputy to Martin Dubravka next season and given a chance; he could excel for his boyhood club.
Regularly featuring for the Scottish side has helped Gillespie hone his skills and Newcastle would have an adept player in their ranks in him. He could also be used regularly in the cup competitions when the fixtures tend to pile up, and Newcastle United could concentrate on other areas of the pitch if they do get their hands on this English shot-stopper.
