During an interview with Football Insider, Alan Hutton has claimed Leeds United are among clubs keen on Connor Goldson. The former Scottish footballer believes that the Rangers star is set to attract the interest of a host of clubs across Britain after impressing at Ibrox.
Hutton told Football Insider, “He’s obviously had good appearances in Europe that a lot of clubs will be watching. I don’t think it’s just Leeds that are interested, I’ve heard rumours of other clubs.”
Connor Goldson’s success at Rangers
A product of the Shrewsbury youth academy, Goldson joined Rangers back in 2018, in a €3.4 million move from Brighton. Making 29 league appearances in his first season in Scotland, he immediately became a key component in the Rangers backline. And the defender has replicated his performances in the ongoing campaign as well.
In fact, Goldson has mustered more minutes in all competitions than anyone else in the Rangers team this season. He has built a formidable defensive pairing alongside the likes of Filip Helander and Nikola Katic, helping the Gers retain the joint-best defensive record in the league.
What can he bring to the table?
Goldson is an orthodox centre-back, who is known for his defensive commitment and discipline. He has an imposing 1.91m frame that gives him a considerable advantage in aerial and physical duels. It is his consistency that makes him a first-choice defender for Rangers.
That being said, Goldson has a knack for making the odd defensive error that often costs his team. Also, he is not the most accomplished ball-playing centre-back, meaning the Englishman is not equipped with the skillset necessary to orchestrate an attack from the back.
Leeds United are among clubs keen on Connor Goldson: A good option for Bielsa?
Goldson may not add a new dimension to the Leeds United backline. However, he is a more than a good alternative, should the Whites fail to secure the services of Ben White permanently this summer.
The Rangers star does have the discipline as well as the experience that could help him thrive under Marcelo Bielsa’s stringent tactical setup. He can ideally form a decent defensive partnership with someone like Liam Cooper, providing not only discipline but also more solidity to the table.
That being said, it remains to be seen whether or not Steven Gerrard will be willing to offload Goldson. Leeds United, as revealed by Hutton, are also set to face stiff competition from other clubs so it will be interesting to see how this transfer saga takes shape in the upcoming summer window.
