According to journalist Diego De Luca, as cited by Area Napoli, Tottenham have submitted a €70 million bid for Victor Osimhen. The LOSC Lille forward reportedly faces an uncertain future at the club amid rumours linking him with a move away from France. So essentially, Tottenham Hotspur are not the only club interested in his services, with Liverpool also ready to splash €70 million for his services this summer.
Victor Osimhen’s redemption at Ligue 1
A product of the Ultimate Strikers academy in Nigeria, Osimhen initially moved to Europe in January 2017, when he joined VfL Wolfsburg for just €3.5 million. However, he failed to make a breakthrough in the Wolves first-team, eventually being loaned out to RSC Charleroi in 2018.
Osimhen impressed in his short spell in Belgium, thus earning himself a €12 million move to LOSC Lille last summer. And he never had to look back since, having emerged as one of the rising stars in Ligue 1 this past campaign.
In fact, the Nigerian international netted 13 goals in 27 league matches during the 2019/20 season. His productivity in front of goal was critical, especially following the summer departure of Nicolas Pepe. It also helped the club finish in the top four, narrowly missing out on the Champions League.
What can he add to the table?
A centre forward by trade, Osimhen’s style of play can be compared to Arsenal superstar Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. He is an absolute goal poacher, boasting incredible finishing qualities that is combined with a technical sense that allows him to place himself in goalscoring situations.
However, what makes the 21-year-old such an interesting striker is his physical prowess. Standing at 1.86m, Osimhen has a feisty figure, who can more than hold his own in one-on-one physical duels. His imposing frame also gives him a considerable advantage in the air, with the striker notably winning 4.4 headed duels this past season.
Tottenham have submitted a €70 million bid for Victor Osimhen: A wise move?
Tottenham making a move for Osimhen does indeed makes sense given the club’s shortages in the goalscoring department. Harry Kane is the only reliable forward, with Jose Mourinho lacking any proper alternative. That’s where the LOSC Lille sensation could come in handy.
Indeed, Osimhen should be an excellent back-up option for Kane. But, given his staggering valuation, it is fair to assume that Spurs are preparing for the potential departure of their prized English international. In this case, Osimhen is not a reliable option, not only due to his €70 million price tag but also his lack of experience at the highest level of football.
Given the current nature of the market, it would not be a wise move by Tottenham Hotspur to splash such amount of cash on an individual, who is yet to impress in any of the top three leagues in Europe.
