According to a recent report by Le10Sport, Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund have been touted to be the latest club to enter the race for the signature of Celtic forward Odsonne Edouard this summer. The report suggests that the German powerhouse are considering a move for the French attacker and that they’re targeting him as they prepare to potentially lose some of their prime talents during the transfer window.
Although it has been suggested that Borussia Dortmund are keen on Odsonne Edouard, Premier League giants Arsenal and Newcastle United are said to be in the equation at this point too. There has apparently been interest from the forward’s native country of France, with the likes of Lille and Lyon also involved in the scenario. The report further claims that the German club though, have already begun discussions with the player’s entourage about a potential summer switch across the channel.
What Incentives Can Celtic Offer Edouard To Convince Him To Stay?
For starters, they could think about offering the Frenchman a new long term contract at the club, that would keep him at Parkhead beyond his current tenure of two years. An increased salary is always a point of attraction, while the Celts’ massive ambitions will be a driving force in the matter as well. In terms of domestic success, the Hoops are, with all due respect to the other teams in the league (the only exception is Rangers), a cut above the crop.
The Celts’ utter dominance in the Premiership has been beyond impressive, and they’ve recently begun making good strides on the European front too. While it could be argued that a Round of 32 finish like this season isn’t what you’d call commendable, the fact that they had a fixture against Kilmarnock right in between the two legs against Copenhagen certainly didn’t help their cause.
Although the league campaign didn’t technically play out till completion, the Hoops had already notched up a stellar goal difference of 70 – the kind of scoring figures that satisfy the desires of most young strikers. Also staying on for one more season to complete Celtic’s ambition of 10 in a row could be a selling point.
How Has Edouard Excelled At Celtic This Season?
The 22-year-old’s consistency has undoubtedly been the most impressive aspect of his play. Edouard’s scoring rate was so sensational that the longest he went without finding the net this season across all competitions, was when he fired blanks for three games in a row back in October.
The attacker picked up back-to-back braces on one occasion this season before he scored in three consecutive fixtures on two separate instances. The forward even seemed to form a good striking relationship with Celtic veteran Leigh Griffiths upon the Scot’s return midway through the campaign.
Borussia Dortmund Are Keen On Odsonne Edouard: Can Lennon Get Him To Stay?
Monopolising a league as competitive as the Premiership certainly isn’t a simple task. Still, the fact remains that on their day, this Celtic side has been the undoing of every Scottish team. If footballing flair is what the Frenchman is looking for, they’ve got enough of that at Parkhead.
If a genuinely involved fan base is what he’s after, Celtic Park probably has him covered. But, if Edouard is instead looking to simply take his career to the next level, then it’s unlikely that anything Neil Lennon says will be able to tip the scales in the Celts’ favour.
