According to a recent report by La Telegramme, as has been quoted by renowned French source Get French Football News, Ligue 1 outfit Brest are said to have dropped out from the race to sign Clermont Foot forward Adrian Grbic.
A report from Sky Sports last week had linked the forward with moves to Brighton and Scottish giants Celtic and Rangers, and with one of their biggest competitors in Brest now out of the picture, the clubs mentioned above could have a run at the player.
With Rangers keen on Adrian Grbic, it wouldn’t be overly surprising to see Steven Gerrard make a move in the summer. Although there is the need for another striker at the Ibrox Stadium as well, the Ligue 2 ace’s €10m asking price could come as a roadblock to the Gers. The forward is currently contracted to the French second division side until the summer of 2022. However, given the current footballing situation around the world, moving away is definitely a viable option for the Austrian.
How Has Adrian Grbic’s Ligue 2 Season Gone?
The 23-year-old striker arrived at Clermont Foot after a few years away from the big European leagues, where he spent time with a couple of Austrian clubs. Formerly of Bundesliga outfit Stuttgart, it wasn’t until the summer prior to the current campaign that the Ligue 2 side signed Grbic. Having joined on a free transfer, it must be conceded that Grbic’s impact on the Clermont front-line was quite sensational.
Capable of playing on either flank or preferably as the main striker, the Austrian has amazing finishing ability in and around the box, while he also displays commendable unselfishness. The 23-year-old’s 26 outings in the league for Clermont this season have yielded a stellar record of 17 goals and four assists, while all the rest of his teammates combined only managed to put the ball into the net sixteen times in total. Could Rangers Do With A Striker Of Grbic’s Talents?
In Alfredo Morelos, the Gers already possess one of the deadliest strikers in the whole of Europe. However, it must be conceded that the Colombian wouldn’t suit all the playing styles that a team like Rangers would have to employ to properly challenge Celtic to the title next season. Jermaine Defoe’s rising age means that the English veteran is 37 now, and although he’s been used mostly as a substitute, it just doesn’t feel secure to have a man of that age as the primary back up. Florian Kamberi hasn’t done nearly enough to earn himself a place in the side so far.
Rangers Keen On Adrian Grbic: Should Gerrard Push To Get This Done?
The forward has been in sensational form all through the current campaign, and with French football’s suspension already announced, it means that Clermont will not be getting promoted to the Ligue 1. Grbic would provide a very different kind of option to Alfredo Morelos, and considering all the European engagements they’ve had to deal with this season as well; it would be smart on Gerrard’s part to bring in an alternate option to lead the line in treacherous situations.
Grbic seems to tick all the boxes from a Rangers perspective, and if they’re able to afford the €10m asking price, there’s no reason this transfer couldn’t take place in the summer. However, in all honesty, it seems the Ibrox side can afford this signing only if Morelos moves on this summer.
