The Liverpool front three have arguably been the best attacking trio in England for the last few years. They have helped Liverpool lay their hands on the Champions League and the Club World Cup and are on the verge of winning their first Premier League title in 30 years. However, what the club have lacked in pursuit of all their glory is suitable back-up players for their attacking trio.
Previously there were reports that Liverpool are in the market for winger Ferran Torres as the club had been monitoring the progress of the starlet. In that regard, AS is now reporting that the Kop target has refused a contract extension with his club Valencia.
Who is Ferran Torres?
20-year-old Torres, whose name is deceptively similar to another Liverpool great who had made a name for himself after arriving from Spain, started his career at Valencia as a youth player. Slowly and steadily, he graduated from the youth setup to the reserves side and then made his debut for the first team in 2017.
Since then he has been a regular name in the team sheet, and despite his tender age, the Spain U-21 has so far featured in 62 La Liga matches for the team, scoring six times. 25 of the 62 appearances have come this season, before the sudden halt due to the COVID-19 pandemic, indicating that he has established himself as a first-team regular.
What would he bring to the Merseyside?
Torres primarily operates from the right-wing, although at times he has been deployed on the left. His dribbling skill has attracted the attention of many, and so has his work-rate. This hard-working nature of the Spaniard allows him to not only help his side in the attack but also to drop back and assist in the defence. Like any modern-day winger, he tends to cut inside and take a chance at the goal.
Should Klopp go after Torres?
While Divock Origi has produced moments of magic, the Belgian has not been consistent enough to be considered as a replacement for any of the Liverpool front three. Xherdan Shaqiri, on the other hand, has not had the kind of impact the German manager would have liked, and now the ex-Bayern midfielder’s future hangs in the balance.
If Liverpool are to perform at the level they have been doing for a considerable time; it is imperative that they go after someone whom the gaffer can bank upon in case one of his star forwards is absent. In that regard, Torres would be a brilliant addition. Moreover, the fact that he can drop back and help in the defence would further up his stakes for the Reds due to the nature of Andrew Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold to move up and join the attack.
