According to a recent report by Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo, quoting a story in Croatian newspaper Sportske Novosti, reigning La Liga champions Barcelona are set to enter a transfer battle against some of the continent’s biggest clubs, in an attempt to acquire the services of Inter Milan midfield ace Marcelo Brozovic. The report suggests that the Croatian playmaker is in the Catalan side’s transfer agenda for the summer.
It has been suggested that the midfielder is attracting interest from various European heavyweights, including Real Madrid, Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain. The Catalan club’s supposed positive transfer relationship with Inter Milan has also been highlighted in the report, as the pair are involved in multiple transfer dealings. In essence, Barcelona are keen on Lautaro Martinez, while the Serie A side are after Arturo Vidal and Ivan Rakitic.
What Is Barcelona’s Current Midfield Situation?
The Blaugrana have always been known for having one of the most dominant midfield rosters in the continent. Although that hasn’t entirely been the case over the last couple of seasons, there’s no denying that they possess some supremely talented players in the role. The Nou Camp club have quite visibly struggled to gain control of the midfield zone this season, even in fixtures against the La Liga’s relatively ‘smaller’ clubs.
While the presence of a composed head like Sergio Busquets has done wonders for the Blaugrana over the years, even the Spaniard went on to make a couple of questionable errors this season. Other names in the squad include Frenkie De Jong, Arthur Melo, Ivan Rakitic, Arturo Vidal and young Carles Alena. Rakitic and Vidal, as has been mentioned before, have been linked with moves to Inter Milan.
Should Barcelona Move For Brozovic This Summer?
The addition of a high-energy box-to-box midfielder like Brozovic would help push this Barcelona side in the right direction, as they’ve struggled to find creativity in the final third over periods all through this season. While the injury to talisman Luis Suarez could be partially to blame, it must be conceded that most of the responsibility must fall onto the shoulders of the midfielders. The Croatian has the quality and enthusiasm required to pitch in on either end of the field and could end up being a good fit.
Although Real Madrid are also said to be involved, it’s unlikely that they will sign another midfielder, considering the sheer number that Zidane already has at his disposal. At Barcelona, rising age is an obvious concern, as unlike Real Madrid, they haven’t tried to rebuild the squad from scratch every time something goes wrong.
Brozovic picked up four assists and three goals from his 23 Serie A appearances this season, while he also contributed effectively in the defensive third. Signing a hardworking player like that would go a long way at a club like Barcelona, and if they’re able to beat Madrid to his signature, it must be considered to be quite the coup by the Catalan side.
