Manchester City have secured the services of Kluiverth Aguilar. The Allianz Lima right-back will join the Premier League giants in May of next year when he turns 18. However, the 16-year-old will likely have to start his Man City career with a loan move away from the Etihad, possibly at one of the franchise’s feeder clubs.
Who is Kluiverth Aguilar?
Aguilar is regarded as one of the most talented young individuals in Peruvian football at the moment. The youngster rose to prominence at Allianz Lima, when he was promoted to the first-team in January. In fact, he has already made nine competitive appearances for his club while also featuring for Peru’s U23 side at the age of just 16.
A right-back by trade, Aguilar is a proactive defender. What makes him such an impressive young individual is that unlike most modern-day fullbacks, he is aware of his defensive chores. The 16-year-old has a decent 1.80m figure that gives him the physical edge, ultimately making him an excellent tackler.
Aguilar also has the pace to cover the ground quickly, making him a defensive asset. Going forward, meanwhile, the Peruvian has an eye for that key pass that enables his side to create opportunities in the final third. Moreover, he can thread crosses into the box by venturing out wide.
Will Aguilar be useful for Manchester City?
By the time Aguilar arrives at the Etihad, Manchester City will likely decide on the future of Joao Cancelo. The Portuguese right-back has struggled to oust Kyle Walker and has thereby struggled with a lack of game-time. His departure could pave the way for Aguilar to become the ideal alternative to Walker.
But, it is almost sure that the Sky Blues will sign a new right-back if Cancelo leaves, which means the Peruvian will most likely be incorporated into the reserve team. There, he will have to compete with Alpha Dionkou and potentially another young right-back coming from the U18 setup.
Therefore, it is unrealistic to assume that Aguilar will be given the opportunity to make an immediate impact at the Etihad.
However, a loan move to one of Manchester City’s sister clubs might not be a bad option, as far as Aguilar is concerned. The 16-year-old could undoubtedly thrive, especially at a European club like Girona FC. A transfer to MLS isn’t unrealistic either, with the American top-flight continually improving.
