In a recent interview with the Bild, Bayer 04 Leverkusen youngster Kai Havertz revealed his desire to make a switch away from the Bundesliga amid recent interest from Liverpool, Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Real Madrid. The German playmaker is prepared for a new challenge and said (via Bild), “I am ready to take a big step and I like challenges. For me, this also includes (playing) abroad.”
Havertz’s Spectacular Emergence In German Football
This latest development seems like a ‘come and get plea’ from Havertz to any of his potential suitors despite his current contract at the BayArena running until the summer of 2022. The German midfield ace has struggled to rediscover his rich vein of form from last season but has still managed to put in some memorable performances from the number ten position in Peter Bosz’s first-team during this campaign.
The 20-year-old has appeared in 34 matches for Leverkusen this term, registering ten goals and eight assists in all competitions. Even though Havertz has bettered his assists total from the previous campaign, he had struggled to be as prolific as he was in the last season when he banged in 20 goals in 42 appearances.
The Aachen-born whizkid has averaged 1.6 shots, 2.1 key passes and 2.0 dribbles in every 90 minutes of the league and European football this season which showcases just how productive he has been for Leverkusen in the attacking third of the field (stats via whoscored). At such a tender age, Havertz has already secured seven senior caps for the German national side while scoring one goal for his homeland in the process.
Maybe a change of scenery this summer could offer him a bigger platform to hone his skills and stake a claim in Joachim Low’s squad for next year’s UEFA European Championship which has been delayed due to the recent COVID-19 pandemic.
What Will The German International Bring To Anfield?
Havertz can use his pace and agility to get the better of his marker in the final third and has shown outstanding composure and ball-control when making runs towards the opposition penalty box. The German is technically superior to most others players in the Leverkusen squad and has displayed good football intelligence by establishing himself as a constant menace for the opposition defenders. He is also a tireless worker in midfield and has all the skillset that Jurgen Klopp usually looks for in a midfielder.
Should Klopp Orchestrate A Move For Havertz This Summer?
Havertz will be a great fit for Liverpool’s brand of football at Merseyside as he hardly gives away the ball as evidenced by his pass completion rate of 87.1% in the German top-flight this season (stats via whoscored). The Leverkusen starlet will not only add plenty of goals and creativity to the Reds midfield but also enhance the overall depth of Klopp’s squad.
The likes of Georginio Wijnaldum, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita have struggled to score and create goals freely during their time at Anfield so they can all benefit from some added competition in the form of Havertz in the coming years. However, there is a chance that the German’s arrival could restrict the growth of some of Klopp’s younger players like Curtis Jones and Harry Wilson as they are currently in the cusp of breaking into his starting XI.
Either way, it’s not every day that a player of Havertz’s quality and potential becomes available. So if there is even the slightest chance for the reigning world club champions to lure Leverkusen into doing business for their prized asset this summer, then the Reds should strongly consider taking it. With all things considered, it makes a lot of sense for the Merseyside giants to launch a big-money move to bring the German prospect to the Northwest of England before the start of the new campaign.
