As reported by Yorkshire Evening Post, Leeds United captain, Liam Cooper hopes that Ben White will stay at the club even after the end of his loan contract. The defender joined the club in a season-long loan deal from Brighton & Hove Albion last summer.
“He’s such an intelligent defender, and I think he is going to go on to have an unbelievable career – hopefully, that can be with Leeds United.”, Cooper told Sky Sports. And in this article, we will discuss why White’s prolonged stay at Leeds United could be critical in the club’s near future.
One of the best performing defenders in the Championship
Leeds United have attained the best defensive record in the Championship this season. They have conceded only 30 goals in 37 matches. And credit should be given to the central defensive combination of Cooper and White. The latter, in particular, has emerged as one of the best defenders in the Championship this campaign.
Indeed, White has impressed the onlookers with his maturity and positional understanding. His ability to read the game is well backed up by the fact that he has more interceptions than anyone in the second division of English football this campaign. This has played an essential role in Marcelo Bielsa’s aggressive defensive tactics.
White has also impressed with his tackling, attaining a success rate of 77% while attempting 2.2 tackles per game. Meanwhile, the Brighton defender has made three clearances per game as well while his tally of 105 aerial duels won is remarkable given the fact that he is not one of the tallest defenders in the league.
Therefore, White’s defensive contribution has been essential in helping Leeds United emerge as the best team in the division. And his presence in the side could be equally important when the Whites ply their trade in the Premier League next season.
Bielsa will struggle to find a replacement
One major issue Leeds United are likely to face following the return of White to Brighton & Hove Albion is to find a proper replacement. The Coronavirus crisis has already taken a heavy financial toll in the transfer market, which could significantly increase competition – making it difficult for Bielsa to sign his desired target.
Even if the Whites do manage to sign someone with potential, the player would likely require some time to settle into his new club, which is something Leeds cannot afford in the Premier League. Hence, their main priority should be to retain the services of White next season. But, with clubs like Liverpool reportedly interested in his services, that is unlikely to be the case.
