According to The Sun, Tottenham Hotspur have been given a massive boost in their pursuit of Willian. Barcelona have passed on the opportunity of signing Chelsea winger, meaning he will either move to Spurs or Paris-Saint Germain in the summer when his current contract at Stamford Bridge comes to an end.
Where does Willian fit in at Tottenham?
Tottenham Hotspur have made a lot of moves in the transfer market, notably singing Giovani Lo Celso and Steven Bergwijn over the past 12 months. However, they still haven’t been able to fill the creative void that was created due to Christian Eriksen’s lack of form and his eventual departure to Inter Milan in January.
Lo Celso has shown glimpses of his talents and has arguably been the best Spurs performer since the turn of the year. However, the Argentine has lacked support from the wider areas of the pitch, especially with Son Heung-Min injured and Lucas Moura having to play in a central role.
Bergwijn has enjoyed a promising start to his Premier League career. But, the addition of an experienced individual like Willian could provide Jose Mourinho with more tactical options at his disposal. He can be deployed in a wider attacking role alongside Son with Harry Kane leading the attack.
The likes of Lo Celso can operate in a number ten role – making Tottenham much more effective going forward. It is also fair to point out that Willian’s ability to get to the byline and provide dangerous crosses could benefit a striker like Kane.
Why Willian will likely succeed
What makes Willian such an exciting signing for Tottenham Hotspur is not just his attacking quality. The Brazilian is one of the most experienced wingers in the Premier League right now, having made 226 appearances in the English top flight. He has also won 69 caps for Brazil.
This experience at the highest level of football could be invaluable to a Tottenham attack that is poised to undergo a transition, especially with new players like Ryan Sessegnon, Lo Celso and Bergwijn. Also, the ex-Anzhi winger has won two Premier League titles with Chelsea as well as the Europa League and the FA Cup. Hence, he can bring the winning mentality to the Spurs side.
But more importantly, Willian has experience of working with Mourinho. In fact, it was the Portuguese mastermind who initially brought him to Chelsea in 2013. And their close relationship should help the Brazilian succeed at Spurs.
