According to a recent report by Sky in Germany, Bayer 04 Leverkusen midfield ace Kai Havertz has decided to seal a move to Bayern Munich during the summer transfer window despite being recently linked with a switch to Liverpool. El Desmarque had reported last month that both the Reds and Real Madrid were interested in acquiring the German playmaker’s services. The fact that Jurgen Klopp was of the same nationality as the player and Liverpool’s capability to spend ‘a significant sum of money’ for him in the transfer market made them a firm favourite in the race for his signature.
However, the situation has changed, and Sky in Germany are now claiming that the Leverkusen youngster is seeking a transfer to the Allianz Arena with Bayern Munich boss Hans-Dieter Flick eager to bolster his midfield options by bringing Havertz to Bavaria when the transfer window reopens later this year.
Havertz’s Steady Growth In German Football
The German prospect has failed to recapture his stellar form from last season, but he has still managed to produce some productive performances for Peter Bosz’s side during this campaign. He has banged in ten goals and provided eight assists in 34 appearances for the Bundesliga outfit this term on all fronts. Havertz’s stats prove that he is still the same creative presence in Leverkusen’s first-team but has not been as clinical as he was in the previous campaign when he scored 20 goals in 42 matches.
The Aachen-born talent has averaged 1.6 shots, 2.1 key passes and 2.0 dribbles per game for the German side across all competitions which highlights how effective he has been going forward (stats via whoscored). At such a young age, he has also represented Germany in seven international fixtures and has got one goal to his name for his nation thus far.
If Havertz can continue to perform at such a high level, then he should be confident about being included in Joachim Löw’s squad for the UEFA European Championship which has been rescheduled to kick off at the end of next season due to the recent COVID-19 outbreak.
Missing Out On Havertz: Big Blow For The Merseyside Giants?
Havertz can use his quickness to dribble past the opposition defenders and shows excellent composure and ball-control while doing so. He is technically gifted, has a good football IQ, is a willing worker and has all the attributes that Jurgen Klopp generally looks for in a player. Therefore, missing out on him will be a massive blow for the Liverpool head coach and his long-term plans at Anfield.
The young German international would have been a perfect fit for Klopp’s style of play at Merseyside. He excels at creating some decent goal-scoring chances and is also an accurate ball-distributor as evidenced by his pass success rate of 87.1% in the Bundesliga this season (stats via whoscored).
The Reds have sometimes lacked creativity from their midfield department since the departure of Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona at the start of 2018. Havertz would have been the ideal candidate to fill the void left by the Brazilian’s exit, but it now seems like Klopp will have to look elsewhere in search of a quality playmaker in this off-season.
