Wayne Rooney will be captaining the England side when they will take on Scotland at Wembley, Gareth Southgate has revealed.
The Manchester United forward had been struggling to get back to his form but in recent outings, he has shown raised his form as he scored United’s only goal against Fenerbahce. He was also quite good against Swansea and his improved performance has led Southgate to recall him in the team. He was dropped from the squad in the last match, a 0-0 draw against Slovenia.
Southgate admitted that Rooney has improved a lot than what he used to be at the start of the season , “He’s in a better place than he was for the last get together in terms of his sharpness, confidence,”
“He’s really an experienced player for game like this. There was no hesitation from my point of view to play him.”
Jordan Henderson was handed the captaincy in the previous match but the gaffer said that a player like Rooney can always be an asset to a team.
“He’s playing well, he’s played well in the last couple of games for Manchester United. He’s a player that when he’s in a rhythm of playing that helps. He’s confident.”
